043 - Amelia Huff (Zhea Erose)

043 - Amelia Huff (Zhea Erose)

Voice expert Amelia Huff and I talk about the harmonic series in an in-depth way! Memes, witchcraft, acoustics, production, human-voice aesthetics, and novendecimal scales are just some of the many topics we cover in this exciting conversation! In her music, Amelia uses the harmonic series in macro-harmonic systems whose notes’ frequency ratios share denominators, instead of scales built from tonality diamonds as is usually the case. Our harmonic series talk is particularly revelatory because of Amelia’s unique methodology, our dissection of unfair assumptions (inversional similarity, the limit as a measure of overall sound) and how we relate the harmonic series to a multiplicity of concepts such as speaker vibration. And seriously, you have to check out her music and Patreon, her work is positively gorgeous and beautiful.

    042 - Sintel

Sintel is a biologist, visual artist, game creator, and multi-instrumentalist who uses a variety of tuning systems in his work. Our stimulating conversation covers topics such as music theory, software friction/workflow, improvisation/self-teaching, psychoacoustics, and the human genome. Sintel is creating several useful kinds of software for creating microtonal music, most notably an editor using continuous pitch lines, and a script for rendering 12 tone equal temperament melodies in another tuning. Check out his newest album, “Outer Gardens,” and the aforementioned software, below!

Hidekazu Wakabayashi is a multi-instrumentalist who puts his works on YouTube with lots of incredible visual content! Among those discussed include Tolgahan Çoğulu’s microtonal guitar frets, the fluid piano, non-Western flutes, and fretless guitars. We also figure out who’s best between YouTube and Bandcamp!

    40edo - 🎧👂🔜🖤💗📛🎲🎰🎮🥇🚴🌫👂👂💘

Sevish and Jacob Barton interview Stephen Weigel about his new absurdist postmodern EDM album, one that pushes the envelope with regards to how complexity is perceived and how tuning systems are defined and used. Topics include speaking vs. writing, xenrhythm, the Bandcamp scene, imaginary divisions of the octave, dog vs. cat people, workflow, exploring new constraints on parameters, support, and how to piss off the right people.

    039 - Hitomi Shimizu (Syzygys)

We talk about the microtonal pop duo Syzygys and how they play with Harry Partch’s 43-tone Genesis scale. How do you make music sound interesting when your keyboard has less range than an ocarina? How do you tune a reed organ to 11-limit JI without a computer? Why did György Ligeti almost buy Syzygys’s microtonal keyboard? Find out in this episode!

    038 - Joe Monzo

    038 - Joe Monzo

Joe Monzo and I talk about lots of tuning theory and memories of events past. Comparisons are made between 37edo (alas! The episode is only 1 away!) and 22edo, as he recently completed a wildly chromatic score of a 37edo piece called “The Kog Sisters.” Joe Monzo came up with many important concepts and has gathered a lot of historical and mathematical information together on his website, initially hosted at sonic-arts, but now on tonalsoft. We talk jazz, Tonescape (lattice software), Musescore, workflow, his book (JustMusic), notation (especially of 37edo), LaMonte Young, the monzo (easy way to write primes which Joe first used in tuning theory), interval lists, high-number EDO’s as measurement tools, and, of course, “breaking the lattice barrier.”

    Music
Intro: Kog Sisters (37edo) - Joe Monzo
Glass Onion (retempered in 22edo by Joe Monzo) - The Beatles
    Afrikan Song - Joe Monzo

    Comma pump puzzle - Bendetti

Noiseless Patient Spider (mixed 144edo and JI) - Joe Monzo

Learning about the hidden notes

Each episode of "Now & Xen" features discussions of microtonal or xenharmonic music. If you ever wondered about possible musical notes and tunings beyond the ones we know, this podcast might interest you. Several episodes feature interviews with musicians and performers who use microtonal music and working in a variety of idioms, from pop and rock to classical music. A couple of early episodes also address the construction or adaptation of instruments for microtonal scales, software for music production, and the theory behind scale formation. Some discussions are dense for people like myself, with little to no formal music theory or training, but you will also hear clips from compositions or songs, and you don't need to have a background in music to open your ears and listen. You are certain to learn something about those hidden notes if you check out "Now&Xen."
