    Jazz Matters Digs Afrika

    Jazz Matters Digs Afrika

World music has a special place in my musical heart and was started by the ground breaking UK group Osibisa in the early 70s with the single music for a Gong Gong, where they created a new genre of music that originated from the early 20th century, Highlife music that is characterised by jazzy horns, multiple guitars and an up-tempo, synth-driven sound.

Then came along the song that launched Osibisa, ‘Sunshine Day, the band set my musical ears, heart and soul alight when they Combined disparate sounds from Africa, America, the Caribbean, Osibisa broke traditional genre boundaries to emerge as the ultimate African band for me.

This was the start of my appreciation and love for world music, after hearing Osibisa I found a record store that specialized in Reggae/Ska and African music, with guidance from the owner and some of the customers, that started my wonderful journey along the musical yellow brick road of world music.

    Jazz Matters Digs Forgotten Treasures

    Jazz Matters Digs Forgotten Treasures

Periodically, I release an assortment of music I've dubbed "Forgotten Treasures." This ongoing project sprang to life amidst the digitization of my music collection.

As I digitised my music collection from cassette tape, reel to reel and CD, I stumble upon a trove of music that had long evaded my ears, having been tucked away awaiting rediscovery, music that has been buried beneath the layers of time lay a wealth of musical gems that had slipped from my regular rotation. ‘’Forgotten Treasures" was born, a celebration of the overlooked and neglected tunes that once graced my ears.

The playlist is in no particular order, genre, style or time, just as I stumble on the musical gems, I say to myself ‘’I’ve really missed you’’.

Please enjoy the music I love

    Ray

    Mestizo Sounds presents Rise Above

    Mestizo Sounds presents Rise Above

After two months of inactivity, I am happy to present another new programme for NuDirections.

The program under the name Rise Above aims to help people overcome the sadness and devastation caused by a world in conflict. Never underestimate the healing power of music.

I have included some of my favourite tunes I regularly spin at Big Hands, the coolest bar in Manchester, as well as some discoveries like the talented Jon Lucien. I highly recommend listening to his song "Would You Believe in Me" - he may not be a current singer, but he is truly amazing.

Good music is timeless and always worth discovering. Another discovery is the vibrant dancehall tune of More Justice and Truth by Virgin Island’s reggae star Pressure Busspipe.

Another novelty I found recently, is the great tune of Say Truth by Fred Fisher Atalobhor. Inside my DJ boxes, I get my most regular artist's music played in my sets. There you will find Manu Chao, Joe Bataan, Dreadzone, Mo-Horizons, Zulu 9.30, International Velvet and Planet Hemp. Of course, Hip hop artist and producer from Dallas Oneofus with the great track and theme of the programme.

Last but not least, Jah is forever is beautiful melody of lovers Rock by Swish Reggae producer Elijah Solomon and and Jamaican singer Glen Washington. My selection is a bunch of exciting tunes for empowering our minds and souls to Rise Above.

    Playlist
