It Ain't The Meat (It's The Motion) by Swallows

It Ain't The Meat (It's The Motion) by Swallows

    Label: Collectables 3620
    Year: 1951
    Condition: M
    Price: $6.00

Originally released on King 4501. This is one of the terrific 'dirty' rock 'n' roll records from the early 1950's... it's a perfect example of the blatant sexuality that many white folks were afraid of when their little teenagers started listening to black rock'n'roll. :-) Like most white guys, the first time I heard the song was through Maria Muldaur in the early 1970s, but you ain't ever heard the song til you heard the Swallows original! This is a new copy of the out-of-print Collectables reissue.

Mother And Child Reunion by Paul Simon

Mother And Child Reunion by Paul Simon

    Label: Columbia 45547
    Year: 1972
    Condition: M-
    Price: $14.00

Paul Simon was one of the first non-Reggae artists to flirt with the reggae sound, and this is a damned good experiment, if you ask me! I'm always shocked to hear the incredibly powerful Stereo mix that they pressed these 7-inch releases with: Loud is simply not sufficient to describe the enormity of what's in these little grooves. The mp3 snippet I've provided doesn't do it justice, but hopefully you'll get the idea. :-) Collector nerd alert: This is the original release on the red/orange Columbia label. Note: This beautiful copy comes in a vintage Columbia Records factory sleeve. It has very nearly Mint labels, and the audio sounds pristine Mint!

Instant Karma (We All Shine On) by John Lennon

Instant Karma (We All Shine On) by John Lennon

    Label: Apple 1818
    Year: 1970
    Condition: M-
Last Price: $14.00. Not currently available for sale.

Here's a beautiful copy of John Lennon's third solo single, which, as a marvelous article in Wikipedia points out, was one of the fastest records ever to be written, recorded, pressed, and shipped to market -- reportedly in only 10 days. It's also one of Lennon's very best solo recordings, though it (and the two singles that preceded it) never appeared on a Lennon studio album (they did appear on a later compilation LP). The drumming is simply out of this world, and turns out to be by future Yes drummer Alan White. That's Billy Preston on the keyboards, and George Harrison on guitar. The flip is "Who Has Seen The Wind" by Yoko. I'm putting a snippet that contains some of the best drumming bits in the jukebox... just can't ever hear that break enough! Note: This copy comes in a vintage Apple Records factory sleeve. This copy's labels and audio are very close to Mint, and the vinyl looks untouched.

They're Gonna Get You by Count Five

They're Gonna Get You by Count Five

    Label: Double Shot 104
    Year: 1966
    Condition: M-
    Price: $18.00

This is one of the essential singles in the history of psychedelic rock. The flip is terrific too... I wonder how they got so paranoid? This is the first pressing, with the label name at the top of the label. Note: This beautiful copy has Near Mint labels. The vinyl (styrene) looks pretty scuffed up, grading only EX, but the grooves preserve undistorted sound that grades close to Mint. (This scan is a representative image from our archives.)

Him Or Me - What's It Gonna Be? by Paul Revere & the Raiders

Him Or Me - What's It Gonna Be? by Paul Revere & the Raiders

    Label: Columbia 44094
    Year: 1967
    Condition: M-
Last Price: $20.00. Not currently available for sale.

One of my personal favorite Raiders tracks... sadly, one you don't hear often enough. This copy comes in an original picture sleeve. Note: The 45 record itself has pristine Mint sound. The sleeve has notable top-edge wear on one side, with a series of tiny tears.

    Someone's Coming by Who

    Someone's Coming by Who

    Label: Decca 32362
    Year: 1968
    Condition: M-
    Price: $32.00

This is a particularly nice copy of this especially great Who single. Besides the classic A side that everyone knows and loves, you get a superfine, quite catchy Entwistle rocker that hardly anyone knows on the flip side. Check it out! Note: This copy comes in a vintage Decca Records factory sleeve. It has pristine Mint sound. (This scan is a representative image from our archives; this copy does not have a drillhole.)

Ok… but where is the rest?

Nice songs but they are only 1:30-1:40 long (I don't get it?)

~ I get it now, small samples of songs (singles) that are for sale…

Awesomeness!

Great way to sample tons of tunes before buying them on 45. This 45 store is awesome particularly during a pandemic. It’s just like being in a store with all the details you need to make a decision!

Why these are snippets

As author of the podcast, I wanted to explain that these are "snippets" of songs I think very highly of, and I personally listen to my iTunes "jukebox" playlist daily. When I started doing this 10 years ago, I was concerned that loading full songs for free download would be violating copyright law. Not only that, but I'm paying for the downloads myself (not YouTube, for example), and it ain't cheap! If you have, like me, a somewhat short attention span, and if you love to hear a multitude of 5-star tunes in a variety of Pop music genres from the 1950s to the present -- some familiar, some surprises -- then I think you'll get a kick out of this podcast. Lately, the podcast has leaned heavily in the direction of Soul, because there's so much great, undiscovered Soul out there! But you'll find just about every style of popular music somewhere in the podcast. Happy music discovery! It's a big universe out there where 45 records are concerned... much larger than the universe of LPs or other 12-inch vinyl. So many great tunes were never pressed on 33 rpm, and the facsimiles that may appear on reissues (if they even exist) usually don't match up to the power of the audio on the original 45 rpm grooves. 'Nuff said. Enjoy!
