Do you ever feel like a fake? That you don’t have the experience or credibility you need to do the work you’re doing and you’re afraid someone is going to find out the truth? We often call that impostor syndrome and I am here today to tell you that it is doing nothing to serve you. The first time I defended in the courtroom I knew I had zero experience but I didn’t let that stop me. I used other experiences in my life as evidence that I could do this new thing well too. You can overcome impostor syndrome by doing three things — believing in yourself, building credibility in yourself, and empowering yourself with the evidence — to help yourself move forward with confidence.
Today we discuss —
Identifying impostor syndrome
Impostor syndrome refers to high achievers who are unable to internalize their success, resulting in self-doubt In order to advocate for yourself, you have to believe in yourself If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else is going to believe you either
Building credibility in YOU
Credibility is the most important tool for advocating for yourself Credibility starts with believing in yourself First, build credibility with yourself and then you can build it with others Your inner jury first chooses doubt or belief and then influences the outer jury Look for evidence that builds your credibility Use a journal to document the instances of your success
Believe YOU
It is more important that others believe you than that they believe IN you Make small promises and keep them Set small expectations and keep them Build credibility by owning the expectations and promises that you don’t keep
Empowering YOU
When you are faced with a new endeavor, look for evidence that you will succeed There are experiences in your life that will prove that you are capable of succeeding Impostors are liars — do not call yourself a liar just because you’re trying something new Use words that support your hopes and dreams and abilities Empower yourself with evidence of your credibility
