The Duke of Plaza-Toro
by W. S. Gilbert
In enterprise of martial kind,When there was any fighting,He led his regiment from behind(He found it less exciting). But when away his regiment ran,His place was at the fore, O-That celebrated,Cultivated,UnderratedNobleman,The Duke of Plaza-Toro!In the first and foremost flight, ha, ha!You always found that knight, ha, ha!That celebrated,Cultivated,UnderratedNobleman,The Duke of Plaza-Toro!When, to evade Destruction's hand,To hide they all proceeded,No soldier in that gallant bandHid half as well as he did.He lay concealed throughout the war,And so preserved his gore, O!That unaffected,Undetected,Well connectedWarrior,The Duke of Plaza-Toro!In every doughty deed, ha, ha!He always took the lead, ha, ha!That unaffected,Undetected,Well connectedWarrior,The Duke of Plaza-Toro!When told that they would all be shotUnless they left the service,That hero hesitated not,So marvellous his nerve is.He sent his resignation in,The first of all his corps, O!That very knowing,Overflowing,Easy-goingPaladin,The Duke of Plaza-Toro!To men of grosser clay, ha, ha!He always showed the way, ha, ha!That very knowing,Overflowing,Easy-goingPaladin,The Duke of Plaza-Toro!

Spring Cricket (Pickled Poem Ep. 39)
Spring Cricket
by Frances Rodman
He put away his tiny pipe
Last autumn, when the gale was chill:
And now in rusty coat and brown
He tries his strength upon the hill
With fiddle tucked beneath a wing
He staggers over a stubbled ground
He climbs upon a sunny stone
Shakes winter off, and looks around
He polishes his dingy coat
And scrapes a valiant tune and high
To tell his tiny universe
That April's due to saunter by.

Today is Very Boring (Pickled Poem Ep. 38)
Today is Very Boring
by Jack Prelutsky
Today is very boring,
It’s a very boring day,
There is nothing much to look at,
There is nothing much to say,
There’s a peacock on my sneakers,
There’s a penguin on my head,
There’s a dormouse on my doorstep,
I am going back to bed.
Today is very boring,
It is boring through and through,
There is absolutely nothing
That I think I want to do,
I see giants riding rhinos,
And an ogre with a sword,
There’s a dragon blowing smoke rings,
I am positively bored.
Today is very boring,
I can hardly help but yawn,
There’s a flying saucer landing
In the middle of my lawn,
A volcano just erupted
Less than half a mile away,
And I think I felt an earthquake,
It’s a very boring day.

Father William (Pickled Poem Ep. 37)
Father William
by Lewis Carroll
"You are old, father William," the young man said, "And your hair has become very white; And yet you incessantly stand on your head — Do you think, at your age, it is right?" "In my youth," father William replied to his son, "I feared it would injure the brain; But now that I'm perfectly sure I have none, Why, I do it again and again." "You are old," said the youth, "as I mentioned before, And have grown most uncommonly fat; Yet you turned a back-somersault in at the door — Pray, what is the reason of that?" "In my youth," said the sage, as he shook his grey locks, "I kept all my limbs very supple By the use of this ointment — one shilling the box — Allow me to sell you a couple." "You are old," said the youth, "and your jaws are too weak For anything tougher than suet; Yet you finished the goose, with the bones and the beak — Pray, how did you manage to do it?" "In my youth," said his father, "I took to the law, And argued each case with my wife; And the muscular strength, which it gave to my jaw, Has lasted the rest of my life." "You are old," said the youth; one would hardly suppose That your eye was as steady as ever; Yet you balanced an eel on the end of your nose — What made you so awfully clever?" "I have answered three questions, and that is enough," Said his father; "don't give yourself airs! Do you think I can listen all day to such stuff? Be off, or I'll kick you down stairs!""That is not said right," said the Caterpillar. "Not quite right, I'm afraid," said Alice timidly;"some of the words have got altered.""It is wrong from beginning to end,"said the Caterpillar decidedly, andthere was silence for some minutes.

Rain Music (Pickled Poem Ep. 36)
Rain Music
by Joseph Seamon Cotter, Jr
On the dusty earth-drum Beats the falling rain; Now a whispered murmur, Now a louder strain. Slender, silvery drumsticks, On an ancient drum, Beat the mellow music Bidding life to come. Chords of earth awakened, Notes of greening spring, Rise and fall triumphant Over every thing. Slender, silvery drumsticks Beat the long tattoo—God, the Great Musician, Calling life anew.

The Embarrassing Episode of Little Miss Muffet (Pickled Poem Ep. 35)
The Embarrassing Episode of Little Miss Muffet
by Guy Wetmore Carryl
Little Miss Muffet discovered a tuffet,(Which never occurred to the rest of us)And, as 'twas a June day, and just about noonday,She wanted to eat—like the rest of us:Her diet was whey, and I hasten to sayIt is wholesome and people grow fat on it.The spot being lonely, the lady not onlyDiscovered the tuffet, but sat on it. A rivulet gabbled beside her and babbled,As rivulets always are thought to do,And dragon flies sported around and cavorted,As poets say dragon flies ought to do;When, glancing aside for a moment, she spiedA horrible sight that brought fear to her,A hideous spider was sitting beside her,And most unavoidably near to her! Albeit unsightly, this creature politely Said:"Madam, I earnestly vow to you,I'm penitent that I did not bring my hat.I Should otherwise certainly bow to you."Thought anxious to please, he was so ill at easeThat he lost all his sense of propriety,And grew so inept that he clumsily steptIn her plate—which is barred in Society. This curious error completed her terror; She shuddered, and growing much paler, notOnly left tuffet, but dealt him a buffetWhich doubled him up in a sailor knot.It should be explained that at this he was pained:He cried: "I have vexed you, no doubt of it!Your fists's like a truncheon." "You're still in my luncheon,"Was all that she answered. "Get out of it!" And the Moral is this: Be it madam or missTo whom you have something to say,You are only absurd when you get in the curdBut you're rude when you get in the whey.
