Nicole Ederle Interview – Planning Her First 100 Miler

Last week I had the pleasure of talking to recovering attorney slash mom of two slash former long jumper slash dedicated ultrarunner Nicole Ederle and hearing about how she got into this crazy sport and most importantly, how she’s methodically planning her 100 first hundred miler this fall.  Like many people, she’s run a 50k, 100k, and is now ready to step into the unknown.

Nicole faces many of the same issues many of us do: From family obligations to flat roads, how do we prepare ourselves–and our families–for increased training and racing? And how in the heck do we train for hills if we live in a flat area?/ Nicole relies heavily on her coach Emily Harrison to keep her fit and accountable, but also has a self-driven spirit about her that I found to be contagious over the phone.  I assume you will to.

We also talk about the wisdom she gleaned from running with a veteran ultrarunner from Bend, Oregon and what she learned about focusing on the present and future. You’ll notice a theme throughout this episode: Learning, listening, and executing.  Whether it’s books, coaches, friends, blogs, or otherwise, Nicole is wide open to advice and eats it all up.

Nicole Ederle Episode Notes

Here’s our interview with Emily Harrison from earlier this year.

Here’s more about NOLS.

Here’s the 100 she’s running in November.  See you there!

The two books Nicole mentioned are The Ultra Mindset: An Endurance Champion’s 8 Core Principles for Success in Business, Sports, and Life by Travis Macy and  How Bad Do You Want It?: Mastering the Psychology of Mind over Muscle by Matt Fitzgerald.  I’ve got them both and they are must reads for any endurance athlete.
