Moving on up in Distance – A Q&A with Sarah and Eric Ultrarunnerpodcast.com

    • Running

Looking at moving up and running your first ultramarathon?  Maybe you’ve run some 50ks, but are looking at a 50 miler or even a 100 miler.  What do you need to know about making that jump?

Sarah and I take questions from the URP Patreon page about training and racing longer distances.  Do you keep your base mileage the same as your ramping-up mileage?  We discuss gear.  What are some major mistakes or wins we’ve made regarding our kit?  How about mindset?  What tricks can you use in training and during the race to help you endure the 9th, 10th, 11…22nd, 23rd hour of running.  How do you choose the best first 50k, and what if there’s altitude involved?  All these and more are answered by this crackpot team of URP experts.

What’s important to know is that Sarah and I have two different perspectives.  She’s a certified coach who’s got a book coming out soon about trail running (see below.)  I’ve generally flown by the seat of my pants and gleaned information from myriad sources. Sometimes it’s worked, sometimes it hasn’t, and some of it sounds ridiculous (refer to our talk about “hungover” runs.)

If you like this sort of format, let me know!  I’d love to take more questions from the Patron crew and answer them in an upcoming podcast.

Episode Notes:

Here’s the Gary Robbins Interview we discussed

Here’s Sarah’s site.  Look for her book, The Trail Runner’s Companion: A Step-by-Step Guide to Trail Running and Racing, from 5Ks to Ultras, to be released by Falcon Guides and available through amazon this May.  And here’s the 50k she was talking about.

Outro music by the Washburn Family Bluegrass Band

Here’s the URP Patreon Page.  Thanks for the questions everyone!
