Always on point

Pod Save is my absolute go-to for a dose of sanity in the country. With all the swirl going around, I truly appreciate the ability to hear reasoned hope for current events. AND Sam Sanders this week?!?!? My life is made!

Super entertaining but keep perspective

These guys are hilarious and super entertaining — that is, if you are already a progressive voter and agree with them about everything. Lovett and Pfeiffer are also clearly brilliant and insightful. It’s important, however, that consumers keep their perspective on these guys. All four of them are white, privileged, intellectually arrogant, 1%-ers of the US population. They can do as many focus groups as they want; they can obsess over as much polling as they want. They will never actually understand the experience of the voters they feel so superior to. That’s not their fault, necessarily; they just haven’t had experiences of walking hand in hand (ie, as complete equals) with the diverse populations they so desperately want to reach. These guys quickly ascended to “working for Barack Obama” — an accomplishment of which they are sure to remind us every 5 minutes). As a result, unfortunately, they now clearly believe they know absolutely everything there is to know about progressive politics. Their audiences (including me, frankly) are tempted to believe this as well. Unfortunately, we don’t “expand the choir” (from: Anat Shenker-Osorio) by projecting this deeply mediocre and unearned confidence onto people we have literally never even met before, nor even care to understand. The jokes and superficial entertainment of these guys is great. Unfortunately though, it’s driving people away from progressive candidates. These guys just have absolutely no idea this is so because they have never actually, genuinely, and authentically interacted with voting populations who are unlike them.
