Postmodern Realities Episode 389: Fear, Loathing, and Deconverting from the White Evangelical Church: A Review of ‘The Exvangelicals by Sara

Postmodern Realities Episode 389: Fear, Loathing, and Deconverting from the White Evangelical Church: A Review of ‘The Exvangelicals by Sara

Sarah McCammon's The Exvangelicals: Loving, Living, and Leaving the White Evangelical Church uses relevant anecdotes from her evangelical childhood and skillfully weaves her story together with sociological data and interviews of former evangelicals. Her conclusion is definitive. American evangelicalism actually causes harm.

Tragically, McCammon ends the book not only having denied the existence of Hell, and the need for the gospel, but of the resurrection of the dead. The entire contents of the Christian faith discarded, she hopes that she will be able, one day, to peacefully. As McCammon acknowledges, it is not exceptional to find people who have left the faith of their childhood. One new feature of deconstruction facing evangelicals today, however, is the preponderance of “trauma” narratives. Evangelicalism, according to McCammon, isn’t just wrong-headed or untrue. It is harmful.

It is an abiding consolation we read about the disappointments and judgments of those who have walked away, that our Lord Jesus, as He stood on trial before an earthly ruler who would condemn Him to death, insisted that the Truth—He in Himself—would be the salvation of all who believe.

Very thoughtful

I’ve listened to two episodes so far. I love how thoughtful the conversation is on controversial issues. Really focuses on understanding scripture and living life in light of that.

Thought provoking ways to share Christ

Being brought up where everything secular was wrong, Melanie and her guests help me find the positive in this world. Her and her guests open up new ways for me to use pop culture as a tool for sharing Christ. As of late the reading of CRI articles has been very good as well. I drive a lot for work and don’t always have time to read them. I find myself sharing many of the podcasts with friends. Keep up the good work and I am proud to stand side by side with CRI.

So relevant and gets right to the topic

I love the variety of topics and examining current culture through the Christian worldview. The question-and-answer format is great and the writers (guests) are very knowledgeable. I also appreciate that they get right to the topic and don’t waste the first 5-15 minutes doing useless chit-chat and “inside” humor that so many podcasts do.
