The practice of singing can serve beautifully as an object of meditation.

Music unfolds in real time and can center us in the present moment. Singing involves the flow of both imagination and movement, and helps to integrate body and mind. It helps us to explore our inner world of feeling and to connect with others.

Earlier in my career, I used mindfulness techniques to teach singing. Now I think of singing as an effective, enjoyable way to teach mindfulness.

This podcast will explore the intersection between singing technique, Buddhist philosophy, mental and physical wellness, and humanism.

    Coordinated, Uncomplicated Onsets

    Coordinated, Uncomplicated Onsets

The simplicity with which we initiate vocal sound in conversation can inform the way we initiate each phrase we sing. Sung onsets require somewhat more complex coordination than spoken onsets, but the structure that singing provides can actually make sung onsets simpler than spoken ones.

    The Problem of Infinite Potential

    The Problem of Infinite Potential

The practice of singing is an open-ended endeavor—the more you learn and the greater your skill, the more you are able to see the unlimited possibilities of what your voice can do. Paradoxically, the sooner you embrace the reality of this, the swifter and more enjoyable your progress will be.

    Divas & Deities

The practice of singing enables us to embody and give voice to characters who are living the way we would like to live, and experience the kinds of things we would like to experience. These characters also invite us to express powerful emotions and opinions, in ways that can empower us to communicate more passionately and effectively in real life.

    Waiting for Maitreya

    Waiting for Maitreya

A posture of waiting is inherently antithetical to the experience of continually living in the present. Be your own Bodhisattva, rather than waiting for an exalted teacher to arrive.
