    Episode 66 "Listen" (Barry Zvigals)

    Episode 66 "Listen" (Barry Zvigals)

    "Listen"
Architect, sculptor, painter, musician, thinker and sartorial enthusiast Barry Svigals is primarily a listener.
Why? Because “It’s how we determine what is needed.”
You must “Create a space where what’s needed may appear.”
A potent example is Barry’s redesign of Sandy Hook School in Newton CT following its unspeakable school shooting. Instead of shutting himself away and designing a veritable super-max fortress of iron bars, metal detectors and razor wire in the name of school safety, Barry simply sat back and listened. He listened to the survivors.  He listened their parents.  He listened to the students.  The teachers.  The janitors.  The administration staff.  The neighbors… Everyone in and around the community with a connection to the school. The result? Definitely not a fortress but a paradigm shift in the idea of "school safety." Do yourself a favor and google the new Sandy Hook Elementary school because nothing we can say here will do it justice. Suffice it to say: It is what was needed. This was such an inspiring conversation. Please listen.

    Episode 64: "Agent Stoker"

    Episode 64: "Agent Stoker"

Combine equal parts Raymond Chandler and the X-Files.
Add a dash of Black Mirror.
    A pinch of The Shadow.
Season to taste with Philip K Dick.
That’s the recipe for Agent Stoker, a “scripted supernatural fiction” created by this episode’s guests Chris Conner and Brian Nelson. Chris, an actor best known as “Poe” from Netflix’s Altered Carbon plays the titular Agent Stoker. Brian, a writer, best known for the unforgettably devastating film “Hard Candy” penned nearly all twelve of Agent Stoker’s captivatingly twisted episodes (streaming right now on all podcasts platforms). You’d think -based on how dark and warped the world they built around Agent Stoker is- that Chris and Brian might have some… well… issues… Nope! They’re lovely and generously gave us a peek into their creative process. Check it out.

Episode 63: “No Money for a Very Long Time or...How to Drive Your Non-Profit into the Ground” (Jordana and Sean Williams)

Episode 63: “No Money for a Very Long Time or...How to Drive Your Non-Profit into the Ground” (Jordana and Sean Williams)

Jordana and Sean Williams (a director and an actor/musician/audio engineer respectively) are two of the creative forces behind Gideon Media, a production company focused on crafting riveting science-fiction and horror stories for the audio drama space. Their current project is the binge-worthy science-fiction podcast “Give Me Away” (written by past Radio Zamunda guest Mac Rogers). All we can say is that you need get that ‘ish in your earholes right now. Oh and when you listen, you may even recognize the voice of Radio Zamunda’s own Ato! But back to Jordana and Sean… This conversation gave us… as the kids say… Life. There is a pragmatic purity in their relationship that fertilizes not only their art, but also each other. It’s simple, beautiful, honest and -may we argue- the engine that drives their exquisite brand of story-telling. Please enjoy this fantastically inspiring conversation. A little taste… “You can say that you’re any number of things, but eventually how you spend your time is the truth of your identity.”-Jordana Williams.

PS. No Mac Rogers were harmed during the making of this podcast.

Episode 61 “Harriet Tubman: Demon Slayer” (David Crownson)

Episode 61 “Harriet Tubman: Demon Slayer” (David Crownson)

David Crownson was at a crossroads. As an actor living in New York city, he was getting close to a number of plum, potentially life altering roles in film and TV. Close, but alas, no cigar. His mother in Ghana beckoned him home to rest and recharge.  “This ain’t no “Eat, Pray, Love Ma!” he said and yet… Who among you can resist the power of a Ghanaian mother? Wisely, he relented and went home. And we’re lucky he did because on a rainy day while trying to pass the time, David decided to watch some television. He watched a documentary on Harriet Tubman which dovetailed into Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” a little “Captain America: Winter Soldier” and a smidge of “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.” A seed was planted that eventually blossomed into the absolutely phenomenal crowd funded comic book series: “Harriet Tubman: Demon Slayer.” We can’t impress upon you enough how ridiculously dope this comic is. Like dude… Who does that? Who just comes up with a comic book and like publishes it? David Crownson, that’s who. Join us for a fantastic conversation and please go get the book. Trust us.

"Inspiration is a Discipline" Episode 60: (Perry Klebahn & Jeremy Utley)

"Inspiration is a Discipline" Episode 60: (Perry Klebahn & Jeremy Utley)

Perry Klebahn and Jeremy Utley are adjunct professors and Co-Directors of Executive Education at Standford's d.school.  Together they teach "Leading Disruptive Innovation" which is described as a course "that teaches the coaching and leadership skills needed to drive good design process in groups."  As potentially prosaic as that sounds, their methodology is quite iconoclast.  Gone are the staid business plans and drab Powerpoint presentations traditionally used to motivate entrepreneurship.  Perry and Jeremy are looking to inspire.  More to the point, they are looking to facilitate and cultivate inspiration as a discipline in order to unlock the creativity that exists in all of us.  Afterall creativity is not magic. It is simply a solution to a problem.  The solution can be anything from a novel to a song to the Theory of Relativity or maybe even a pair of innovative snowshoes...  Join us for a wide-ranging and truly inspiring conversation.

Episode 59 "Our Fates are Tied" (Cassie Flynn)

We’ve got a real one for you. OG guest Cassie Flynn (Episode 26 “What to do in a Prison in Tuvalu”) is the head of the United Nations Development Promise initiative. She's also one of the founders of the crowd funding community organizing site, IOBY (In Our Back Yards). “I spend a lot of time in rooms with those little translators in your ear listening to people negotiate and discuss how we deal with the climate crisis…” Yeah no big deal but Cassie is on the frontline in the battle against the single greatest threat to life on Earth. How’s it going? We’re not going to lie… It’s grim. We’re screwed. But there is hope… Cassie and her colleagues are making strides in figuring out ways to make climate change resonate with people.  A couple hints. Creativity + Inspiration + The Dope . . .

Fantastic listening that stretches across so many interests -- this is the podcast you want when you need to be turned on to something new -- whether it be music or politics or social justice or technology -- and you want to discover it in the same way as the hosts: through conversation and authenticity. My only complaint? I want more of it more often. Recommended if you like long form discussion and ideas that matter.
