    Images? Cool. Videos? Great. But Clay Manley knows they can’t do a thing without copy. 

    When someone tells you a picture is worth a thousand words, remember: they’re using words to measure value. The fact is, every other kind of marketing content — images and video — relies on copy to close the sale. That’s what Clay Manley knew when he was starting his own copywriting business. He had been writing his own blog for a while, and when it was acquired and he got a full-time job writing content, he began to realize, “Copy is everything.” Clay turned that passion into a career writing for businesses, large and small, in hospitality, pet supplies, health and wellness, and real estate. And how did he start? By giving stuff away.

    If you ask an experienced voice-over artist like Kane Jungbluth-Murry what’s the most important thing about producing a video or commercial, you might expect him to say, “Hiring me.” He doesn’t. He says it’s “understanding your audience. That’s the only way your script will come across the way you want it to.” Kane says watch other samples of content and, if possible, read their scripts ... “as many things as you can that are like things you want to make.” And then — hire the right voice. We can’t all have Kane’s silky baritone, but when it tells you, “Not everybody can do voice-over. The wrong voice ruins the best script,” believe it.

    Great product isn’t enough to scale your business where you want it to be. Jono Petrohilos was feeling good about his business. The site for the online fitness service he and his partner created was seeing 4,000 users a month. Many of them were buying. But Jono admits he didn’t know how those users were finding them and where they were coming from. He hadn’t discovered the power of data analysis. Once he started analyzing the data, he started focusing his SEO strategy to win just a few keywords in his space. This year, their service is Fitness Australia’s Educator of the Year. But as he looks back, he says having a great product without building audience is like opening a restaurant in the middle of a desert.

When mobile communications started out, Matt Gillis spent lots of hours on the golf course showing businessmen what a cell phone could do. Then he was the guy at Verizon that game publishers went to to get their games approved, then started his own game company, then helped mobile app developers make money from ads. Now he runs Clean.io, a cybersecurity company that protects developers against malicious ads. The creators of those ads, Matt says, are “some of the most sophisticated media buyers on the planet.” They ruin the user experience. And some of those users might be yours. So it’s good to have Matt on your side.
