Required Listening
If this isn’t already apart of your daily podcast listening, I highly recommend you do so immediately. The show challenges you to think objectively about the world around you while also making you laugh. I think the host best trait is her ability to balance between those polar opposites (comedy & social issue). Striking that balance reflects that sort of tension we all live with in our daily lives. Highly highly highly recommend you subscribe to this podcast.
Honest and Sometimes Brutally So
Once you hear the intro music for this show, you'll get a sense of the kind of show you're about to listen your way into. Shanghai Chronicles is a sometimes brutally honest and sometimes stream-of-consciousness exploration of the issues of our day, especially issues specific to the black community (esp. U.S.). Recent episodes have examined police and racial violence in the U.S. (and the responses to it), snitch "culture" in the hip-hop world, COVID-19, and so much more. And throughout, its host is honest, offering her personal views on things, frequently in the moment, frequently complicated. I don't always agree, but I certainly find myself really thinking about her take on things, and I think that's more important a compliment than anything else.
So if you want a dose of pop culture and the news with an honest and "in the culture" view, this show is definitely for you.
