Savior Culture Run Amok

The description should read, “Josh Mirsky and Dave Thompson interview a bunch of allistic saviors who think they deserve a pat on the back for doing the bare minimum - hiring autistic workers capable of doing the jobs they’re hired to do.”

With little exception, the businesses and charities featured on the podcast are founded and led by non-autistic people who make their entire business model hiring autistic employees and using that as a selling point to convince the public to buy their goods/services or donate money.

Again, with little exception, these organizations don’t consult with the autistic community in any meaningful way when establishing their business or marketing their products/services and don’t appear to be interested in elevating autistic employees to top leadership roles. They basically see the very act of employing autistic people as one of charity and something they should be feted, applauded and remunerated for.

It’s really not surprising this is the underlying current of the podcast, as the cohosts met while working for just such a savior company/charity.

Sorry to break it to Josh or Dave (or to any of the allistic-led companies they highlight), but, “I hired a bunch of autistic people. Give me money,” is exploitation, not empowerment or allyship.
