Ballet soloist to bonafide academic - a career with Ehlers-Danlos feat. Bonnie Southgate

Ballet soloist to bonafide academic - a career with Ehlers-Danlos feat. Bonnie Southgate

Welcome to the ‘Women in Sports Therapy' podcast from the Sports Therapy Association. In this month's episode we are joined by Bonnie Southgate.

Some of you may know Bonnie from her appearances on the Sports Therapy Association weekly podcast with host Matt Phillips. I have known Bonnie for some years now - having met in 2017 while studying with Mike Grice of Movement Therapy Education. It’s been a delight to see her work and projects grow and gain recognition since then, but she has a fascinating back story predating our first meeting, and so I have been very keen to have her as a guest on the podcast.

Bonnie has been working in her field since 2000 using a blend of therapy modalities, which we discuss in this episode in more detail. She currently practices as a Pilates teacher and teacher trainer, and sports therapist, with a specialism in interventions for those who suffer from symptomatic hypermobility. She is also the MSK adviser to the charity sedsconnective, which is a hypermobility and neurodivergent charity.

Her proudest achievements include managing a high-level dance career, having three children and running a successful business with hypermobile-type Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. She is currently enrolled as a Masters student at Trinity Laban University in London, where she studies Dance Science and has plans to continue researching after her graduation from the programme. Her academic interests draw upon experiences as a dancer, including her time as a ‘Soloist’ in the American Ballet Theatre and a ‘First Soloist’ at Royal Ballet in London.

In this episode we talk about her experience of transitioning from professional dancer to a highly regarded practitioner in hypermobility disorders, as well her plans for the future, which include a new book in her specialist field.

Stillbirth and child loss featuring Debbie Cutts and Rowena Pailing (Sands charity)

Stillbirth and child loss featuring Debbie Cutts and Rowena Pailing (Sands charity)

Trigger warning: It is important to be aware that this episode covers sensitive subjects that some listeners may find triggering. So, if you have experienced a recent or similar bereavement, or you feel that descriptions of medical procedures, loss of life and childbirth might be upsetting or unsuitable for you or those around you, then you may choose to skip this episode.

Welcome to the ‘Women in Sports Therapy' podcast from the Sports Therapy Association. In this month's episode we’re joined by Massage Therapy practitioner Debbie Cutts, from Body Tune Therapy and Rowena Pailing from Sands - a UK-based charity supporting those grieving from baby loss.

Every two hours a family is faced with the devastating news of the death of their baby in the UK. Every day around 13 babies die before, during or soon after birth. In this episode, Rowena describes her role working for Sands and offers information about the much needed services they provide to those affected by the loss of a baby’s life, We also hear from Debbie about her own personal experience of loss and how she found support from Sands and her network of friends and family.

Debbie’s is a particularly moving story. We hope that in hearing how she coped this this tragic loss, and is now channeling her grief, that we can all understand better how to support others through this heartbreaking and sadly all-too-common life event.

All information about the support and resources described in this episode are linked in the show notes to enable access to any help you might need regardless of whether you list.
