Sight Focus vs Target Focus & Why No Medical? feat. Louis Caras | SOTG 1316

Wanna hear the FULL Episode? Sign up for the Grad Program today! Today we have a special guest; Louis Caras, a Tactical Response Small Arms & Tactics instructor who will join us to discuss a troubling situation. Why is it in the year of Our Lord, Two-thousand and Twenty-Five, that there are still so-called experts in the world of firearms who ignore the importance of traumatic medical training and gear? We have a question from an audience member that plays right into our Tech Talk segment from EOTech Inc. What is the difference between target focus and sight focus? Also, can an optic on a handgun be beneficial while moving and shooting or is it a drawback? Student of the Gun has a new partner: Blackout Coffee and you can support the show by using the link found in the show notes. Additionally, Professor Paul has a reminder that Christmas is coming up and now is the time to order an SOTG branded coffee mug for the one that you love. During our Leadership Lesson, Paul has some suggested reading which can now be consumed via audiobook.  Have you read the Morning Mindset book yet? As usual, we have our Fighting Fitness segment. Paul gives an update regarding what we will call the Nick Orr Challenge. Do not neglect your leg strength. And, is eating protein a bad thing? Paul and Jarrad consider an OpEd that seriously questions the consumption of protein. Fighting with Rifles & Vickers Bonus | SOTG 1315

Wanna hear the FULL Episode? Sign up for the Grad Program today! Shooting Range Hearing Protection Guide The discussion focused on hearing protection at shooting ranges, where the professor emphasized that earplugs alone are insufficient due to bone-conductive noise, and recommended using both earplugs and muffs, particularly the Walker Razor electronic muffs. Jarrad inquired about shoulder and cheek weld issues with large muffs, and the professor confirmed that smaller electronic muffs like the Walker Razors work well for shooting. OEG Vision and Shooting Accuracy The meeting focused on discussing vision issues and their impact on shooting accuracy, particularly with the use of an occluded eye gun sight (OEG) and prescription glasses. The Professor shared his research findings and experiments conducted with students, demonstrating how the OEG can improve accuracy for shooters with different vision conditions. Jarrad and Zach participated in the discussion, sharing their personal experiences with the OEG and its effectiveness.  Larry Vickers SOTG Exclusive More content from the previous interview with Larry Vickers to include an exclusive story made available to SOTG. What was Larry originally going to do when he got out of the Army?  Hybrid Firearms Training Discussion The group discussed Student of the Gun University, a hybrid firearms training school that offers online home study and in-person residency programs. They reviewed the benefits of the program, including flexible learning options and accessibility for students worldwide. The conversation then shifted to recent rifle training at Pro Gun Vegas, where they expressed gratitude to the hosts and instructors for a successful event. Wanna hear the FULL Episode? Sign up for the Grad Program today! Audiobooks Now Available on Amazon The meeting discussed the availability of audiobooks for Nicholas Orr's fiction books, including the Pipe Hitters Novel Series, now accessible on Amazon. The professor explained the process of creating audiobooks, noting the previous complexities and the recent simplification by Amazon, making it more affordable for independent authors. They also mentioned a brief technical issue with Amazon's website, which affected access to the audiobooks. The discussion concluded with an announcement of an upcoming tech talk, focusing on a rifle chambered in .22 Nosler and the VUDU-X 1 to 6 optic, with a link to the article provided in the show notes. Glock Pistol Model Discontinuation The discussion focused on Glock's discontinuation of several pistol models, with Jarrad noting that the G19 Gen 4 and MOS Gen 4 were among the affected models, though the G45 and 19 X-ray remained unchanged. The professor emphasized that while some customers expressed concern about the changes, the market ultimately decides which models succeed, and manufacturers cannot accommodate every request. They also discussed how the gun community often criticizes manufacturers for lack of innovation while simultaneously opposing any changes, making it difficult for companies to satisfy their customers. Challenges in Firearms Industry Leadership Jarrad and the professor discussed the unique challenges faced by the firearms industry, particularly regarding political involvement and the need for unapologetic leadership. Jarrad expressed uncertainty about whether gun enthusiasts truly desire strong leadership, suggesting that potential leaders might hesitate due to doubts about followership. They also discussed the complex decision-making process companies face when dealing with political pressures, such as the potential loss of sales in certain states, and the impact such decisions could have on employees and their families. California Glock Ban & Michael Schwartz Interview | SOTG 1313

Wanna hear the FULL Episode? Sign up for the Grad Program today! Radio Show Planning and Content The team discussed the latest news, including a peace deal brokered by their president between Hamas and Israel, and prepared for their radio show. The team also addressed a recent question submitted about charcoal chimneys and decided to include it in the show for fun. Firearms Training and Vision Challenges The episode of Student of the Gun Radio discussed upcoming events, including National Hug Your AK Day on October 18th, and highlighted the importance of vision issues in firearms training. The hosts shared their recent experiences in Texas, where they encountered challenges related to students' sightedness, emphasizing the need for proper eye protection and clear vision during training. They also mentioned an interview with Michael Schwartz of Gun Owners Radio about California's gun control measures and encouraged listeners to participate in upcoming events and discussions. Vision Solution for Shooters The group discussed a vision-related challenge faced by some students who have had corrective eye surgery, resulting in inconsistent shooting accuracy. Jarrad and the professor explored the concept of using an occluded eye gun sight, similar to the OEG technology used by Special Forces during the Vietnam War, to potentially help these students. They hypothesized that covering the red dot sight on a pistol and using both eyes could improve target acquisition for individuals with different vision prescriptions. The professor committed to testing this hypothesis using the scientific method, starting with background research and moving to testing and analysis, with the goal of developing a solution for handgun shooters with vision issues. Bear Hunters & Stochastic Terrorism | SOTG 1310

Wanna hear the FULL Episode? Sign up for the Grad Program today! Shooting Training and Optics Discussion The hosts announced upcoming training events in Texas and Nevada, promoting classes in pistol and rifle fundamentals. They discussed the benefits of using optics like the EOTech for better visibility and accuracy, especially for those with aging eyes or vision issues. The conversation touched on personal experiences with shooting and the advantages of using modern sights compared to traditional iron sights. EOTech Optics Vision Issues The discussion centered around the use of EOTech optics, particularly a story about a military language specialist with macular degeneration who qualified with an M4 rifle using an EOTech HWS, demonstrating how the optic improved her vision enough to pass qualification.  Brand Loyalty and Wildlife Safety The discussion focused on the decline of brand loyalty in the shooting sports industry due to corporate consolidations, with dad expressing concern about companies being bought up and then discarded. The conversation then shifted to a story about Cornell University students in New York who killed and brought a bear into their dorm for processing, which led to a discussion about proper wildlife handling and safety protocols. Crime and Law Enforcement Challenges Recent incidents of violent crime in New York and Chicago, highlighting how repeat offenders continue to commit crimes despite numerous arrests. They emphasized that progressive policies, such as no-bail laws and criticism of the police, may be contributing to increased violence, while lawful citizens are increasingly forced to defend themselves. What is Anarcho-Tyranny? | SOTG 1309

"Anarcho-Tyranny is a political theory that describes a government that is simultaneously oppressive toward law-abiding citizens while being lax or ineffective at controlling criminal behavior." Sounds familiar, doesn't it? We live in a country where 14-time convicted felons can walk the streets unmolested by authorities, yet we constantly have to live in fear of a government bureaucracy suddenly deciding a random piece of plastic will get you arrested. Is this all a big coincidence, or is this a carefully orchestrated set of circumstances? Well, listen up. Wanna hear the FULL Episode? Sign up for the Grad Program today! Student of the Gun Radio Intro Paul mentioned a new Pipe Hitters novella by Nicholas Orr called "Mockingbird" and that work had begun on Book 5 of the series. The show's intro music was played, and they prepared to discuss gear and tech topics, with a particular focus on a recent article about dangerous safety. Tech Talk from EOTech Inc The discussion focused on the importance of having the correct batteries for optic devices, particularly for those using unusual battery types. Paul  shared a personal experience where a dead battery in an optic caused issues at the range, emphasizing the need to check and carry appropriate batteries, especially when traveling or attending training classes.  Warrior of the Week They introduced the Warrior of the Week segment, honoring Charlie Kirk for his courage in speaking truth despite opposition. The discussion then transitioned into the Student of the Gun Homeroom segment, where they planned to explore stochastic terrorism and referenced an article about arbitrage that would be linked in the show notes. Western Civil Society on the Brink Zach read an article titled "When the Wolves Roam Free" discussing the collapse of civil society in Western countries, focusing on issues like crime, immigration, and anarcho-tyranny. He highlighted specific examples, including a recent incident in North Carolina and the situation in New York City, where 63 criminals were responsible for over 5,000 offenses on public transportation due to no-bail policies. Zach emphasized the need to address these serious issues affecting Western nations, which he argued are at a critical crossroads. Racial Bias in Media Coverage We discussed a violent incident where 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Irina Zerutska was stabbed to death on a light rail in Charlotte, North Carolina. The mainstream media largely ignored the story for two weeks, with coverage only emerging through alternative media platforms like X. The attacker, DeCarlos Brown Jr., was a repeat offender with 14 previous arrests, yet was allowed to remain free. The discussion highlighted the contrast in media coverage depending on the race of the perpetrator and victim, and criticized local officials for pausing their meeting to celebrate a council member's birthday rather than immediately addressing the incident. Anarcho-Tyranny and Gun Regulation History Zach read a definition of anarcho-tyranny, describing it as a system where the state is both oppressive and permissive, failing to enforce laws against criminals while over-regulating law-abiding citizens. Dad emphasized the importance of understanding this concept and recommended reading Alexander Solzhenitsyn's Gulag Archipelago to grasp the reality of socialism and the deliberate release of criminals who continue to commit crimes.
