Episode 122: Bay Area band, The Happy's

Episode 122: Bay Area band, The Happy's

Bay Area indie rockers The Happys are premiering a new video for their song "Bipolar" off their most recent EP of the same name.

Stream the "Bipolar" video here: https://youtu.be/rRum1IfADJc

Stream The Happys' 'Bipolar' EP here: https://open.spotify.com/album/0i71jeDuthqMqOb1jwACQ0

Frontman Nick Petty says, "Bipolar is a song written about a girl who I once liked who had bipolar disorder. In hindsight, this song is based on the give-and-take nature of love. The song dives into personal struggles from my childhood with bipolar emotions and tendencies. I always want to empower people through my lyrics to never feel less than anyone else for struggling with their mental health and differences. I also want to emphasize that all people who struggle with mental disorders — whether it’s depression, mania, bipolar disorder or anything else—deserve a fulfilling and happy life and should not be scrutinized by society for their differences and struggles. I believe that if we want to grow as a society, we need to be more empathic and understanding of how others feel. During these times, I want to help people to understand that it’s normal to feel weird and lost during this quarantine. While it will eventually pass, I truly believe that we can use this time to create something beautiful." He adds, “I get what it’s like to not be getting the necessary help while suffering from depression and anxiety. I am very lucky to have this musical outlet to help with my own issues and I want to spread the love and hope to anyone who will listen. I strive to entertain people and let people know it’s OK to be weird, it’s OK to be different.” The "Bipolar" video was shot at Ron Collins Art Gallery in Northern California by Will Rushton, who the band met through Ambassadors of Hope and Opportunity , a nonprofit that helps homeless kids (and helped Petty through his own struggles). About The Happys: Upon release from a 14 month stint in the Marin County Jail, Nick Petty, lead singer and songwriter for Bay Area rock band, The Happys was instructed NOT to enter a bar or be around alcohol or drugs as part of his probation. Of course, Nick went ahead and booked a gig for his band at a local bar. As the band came on stage, the first person he noticed in the audience was his probation officer staring him down. The band tore through the set and after the show, the officer approached Nick with sweat rolling down her forehead from dancing and made an offer - she would let this go if he keeps playing his music. “you guys are really good!” She said. “You’ve got to keep it going!” “It was a wake-up call,” Nick explains. “I realized that jail was not where I saw myself going in my life. I wanted something to stop me from what I was doing, and jail did that. And when I got off drugs, I was able to nurture my creative side.” After the bar “incident,” Nick decided it was time to step things up with his band. He recruited local musician friend, Brett Brazil on bass, Alex Sanchez on guitar and Ryan Donahue on drums. They went to work building their fanbase by playing as many live shows as they could, never turning down a gig. They traveled to the Northwest and Southern California on shoestring tours, toured in support of the Mad Caddies, opened for Agent Orange, Del The Funky Homosapien, and played the main stage at San Francisco’s Haight Street Fair.

Episode 121: LA Duo, Analog Party

Episode 121: LA Duo, Analog Party

Formed in 2018, the young Los Angeles-based duo Analog Party has distilled their love for grunge, classic rock, post-punk, and industrial music into both a debut EP Model Youth (released April 19, 2019) and single Absolution (released June 19, 2020). Comprised of singer/multi-instrumentalist Animaan Pathak and bassist Charles Horin, the band's unique sound walks a fine line between fierce riff-based rock and moody, atmospheric textures, touching on both introspective and existential lyrical themes. Their latest single "One" is reminiscent of bands like Alice in Chains and Deftones -- soaring vocal harmonies, viscous heavy guitars, and mammoth drums serve as an immense sonic backdrop to a brooding reflection on how to exist in an increasingly chaotic society. “Although I wrote the song late last year, the lyrics feel even more relevant now. While the verses capture the overwhelming waves of anxiety, fear, and loneliness that stem from being a young person in this currently f****d up period of history, the chorus captures the dichotomy of hope and hopelessness for the future. The phrase 'I am one' could be viewed as a self-affirming and empowering statement just as much as it is a reflection on how helpless and alone one can feel in today’s society. For the video, we teamed up with our friends at Sleepless Format (Brandon Villalovos and Mike Williamson) to capture a simple performance with a bleak visual tone to match the vibe of the music.” explains vocalist / multi-instrumentalist Animaan.

Episode 120: Anis Maknojia and the Stolen Wheelchairs

Episode 120: Anis Maknojia and the Stolen Wheelchairs

Anis Maknojia’s resume reads more like a 20-year veteran of the Los Angeles creative scene rather than a recent transplant from Houston, Texas. Since arriving in Los Angeles, he has clocked time as a model, an actor, a business owner and producer. However, he credits the social media site Instagram with giving him his first platform of expression. He’s worked with luxury brands including Tom Ford, Don Julio, Giorgio Armani, Mercedes-Benz, among others.

STOLEN WHEELCHAIRS are authentic teenage punk rock. You can’t fake the energy that they emit. Straight from the depths of Hostile City, they play fast, angsty, anthemic hardcore punk with an authenticity that has been lacking in today’s scene. STOLEN WHEELCHAIRS are the latest in a series of forebearers of the punk banner in the Philadelphia area. VIOLENT SOCIETY and THE BOILS come to mind. STOLEN WHEELCHAIRS draw from all these bands and more. Their debut album 'The America' was recorded DIY by vocalist Oscar Capps and the band at the family home. 'The America' is a record lathered with traditional punk influences and sprinkled with much, much more. STOLEN WHEELCHAIRS draw inspiration from a million bands before them, from MINOR THREAT to THE UNSEEN but put their own unreplicable twist on the classic punk rock sound. Oscar and the band can write some unforgettable punk rock anthems. Will The America resonate in the same way as OXYMORON and LOWER CLASS BRATS? That depends on how loud you choose to sing along. The America was in progress before the shutdown. You’ll get a million energetic live shows from East Coast to West and over to Europe when this sh!! storm finally passes.
