Recently I’ve realized that I have a minor obsession with conversations and decided to start a project where I can participate in, document, and share 30-minute conversations that I have with many different people. This project (like each individual conversation) does not really have an agenda.

After recording a few, I’ve noticed that along with the knowledge that a conversation is being recorded, a slightly different energy creeps in (especially in the beginning moments). I know questions pop into my head: Should we avoid topics? Should we try to make it entertaining? In the end, it’s still just a conversation complete with misspeaking, tangents, segues, laughter, changes of pace, and, at times, silences (or the sound of thinking).

Feel free to eavesdrop.

    Lauren (Skinning Carrots)

    Lauren (Skinning Carrots)

Back for Season 2! Lauren and I sat in her car in Hollywood and finally had the conversation we tried to have last year. We talked about run-ins with aggressive strangers, kids who won't know what Toy Story is, enjoying doing your favorite things with somebody, groceries, and makeup & musicals. Dean 2 (For Every Kid There's a Dad)

Dean 2 (For Every Kid There's a Dad)

This one has a twist at the end! I'm writing the rules as I go and it felt like the perfect time to have the first repeat guest. Dean and I did a little night hike to an unoccupied campground and had a chat around a fire, which provided a nice little audio backdrop. The topic list included beef jerky, Hunter S. Thompson, cigarettes, Indian Guides, kids' shows, being 2 miles from civilization, bearded lions, pet quirks, crunching, bloody knuckles, and an unfinished drug locker story. Nate (Resting Face)

    Nate (Resting Face)

It's been a while, but a catsitting situation opened up a door for a late night conversation. Nate invited me to the cat's apartment and we gabbed on and on about remembering names, 1950s businessmen, smiling, improv (surprisingly), not getting frustrated, production assistants, resting faces, regrets, and the dump. Drew (Eye Contact)

    Drew (Eye Contact)

Drew came over to my apartment and we complimented each other before almost falling in love (after seizing an opportunity to experiment with the pause button). We talked about being on improv teams that were broken up, honesty, uncomfortable eye contact, Drew's upcoming wedding show, the challenge of mastering different improv styles, deciding whether to put an epithet or an epitaph on your tombstone, fancy cocktails, and words. Jen (Joe Lo Truglio)

Back in LA, I met up with Jen on the outside patio of Bricks & Scones to talk about Susan Miller's horoscopes, balance and zen, standup bits (Hulk sex, E.T., and a red wagon), driving music, approaching celebrities, Friends, and Buffy. Jady (There Are a Lot of Movies.)

I met my friend Jady at Alchemy Coffee in Salt Lake City for an afternoon cup and chat. Among the pop culture topics we discussed were 50 Shades of Grey, Murakami, Stephen King, Black Mirror (again), The League of Gentlemen, Netflix, Lost Girl, The Ten, The Shining, recreating movie posters, and Winona Ryder. We also talked about fantasy and horror, over-thinking things, moving back home, making friends, the mountains, an excellent 9-year-old skier, riding bicycles
, and chem trails. More info about this project: http://talksomewhere.tumblr.com/about
