If you’re a freelancer, independent contractor or small-business owner, you may need to pay self-employment tax. You usually must pay self-employment tax if you had net earnings from self-employment of $400 or more. The law sets the self-employment tax rate as a percentage of your net earnings from self-employment. This rate consists of 12.4% for social security and 2.9% for Medicare taxes.
