Episode 004 - Dre Trav and Tall,Drk Serve Up YAMMS Without the Marshmallows

Episode 004 - Dre Trav and Tall,Drk Serve Up YAMMS Without the Marshmallows

Dre Trav and Tall,Drk (pronounced "tall, dark") share their collaborative recipe for the perfect YAMMS. While the album satisfies listeners' appetites for excellent hip hop, the duo shares some of the bittersweet ingredients that helped create the flavor and feel of the LP.
Episode 4 of the Act Like You Knew Podcast just scratches the marshmallow-free surface of YAMMS, giving listeners a peek into the lives, creative processes, and music of both emcee, Dre Trav, and producer, Tall,Drk. The interview feels something akin to choppin' it up with childhood friends, more than listening to artists ramble about making moves in the music industry. That makes sense given the familial vibe of YAMMS, and given the context in which the album was created - one in wherein both artists' families experienced a great deal of love, loss, and healing through the process of creating, writing, recording, and releasing You Always Make Me Smile. Be present. Enjoy.
    Mentioned in the episode:

Episode 003 - Odessa Kane, Felt1, and Rocky R3y are Col’ Killin’ Records

Episode 003 - Odessa Kane, Felt1, and Rocky R3y are Col’ Killin’ Records

Odessa Kane is free. Free to create. Free to progress. And free to be vulnerable. He, his DJ, Felt1, and his engineer/producer, Rocky R3y, discuss the journey that has freed Kane and that has led to the formation of their label, Col' Killin' Records. The imprint's first release, Boyz Off Briarwood Vol. 1, was released in late December of 2018 and has been well received by Odessa Kane's base.
In this episode of the Act Like You Knew Podcast, the trio shares their genesis, digs into the makings of Boyz Off Briarwood, discusses the depth and breadth of Kane's music and life, and let listeners know just what to expect from Col' Killin' in 2019 and beyond. Felt1 and Odessa Kane talk coming up in Paradise Hills, and why their hometown has such a huge presence in Kane's music; the mixtape's lead-off track, "Paradise Hills", pays homage to their stomping grounds and brings listeners into a world hidden in the hills. Odessa Kane delves into label politics, personal battles, fatherhood, religion, becoming free, and more, allowing listeners a little look behind the artist and into the man. After listening, I'm convinced that you'll want to listen to BoyzOffBriarwood Vol. 1, and will definitely want to tune in to everything Col' Killin' Records has in store for 2019.

Episode 002 - Blame One Unravels the 34th Scroll

Episode 002 - Blame One Unravels the 34th Scroll

Blame One is closing a chapter as he rounds out his thirty-third year of writing raps. The 34th Scroll, produced by fellow North County San Diego emcee, Veks, will be released on December 7th, 2018, and this podcast episode brings our trilogy of interviews full circle. Blame was one of my first handful of interviewees, and in THIS INTERVIEW back in 2012, he shouted out Veks (I spelled it "Vex" at the time) as someone he believed to be worthy of receiving the torch Blame One is perpetually threatening to pass down - we touch on that a bit in the episode. Blame credits Veks with creating a sound that allows him to confidently place his final period at the end of this chapter of his artistry, as well as to foreshadow what fans, new and old, ought to expect from the veteran rapper in 2019 and beyond.

Blame One drops mad wisdom for The Act Like You Knew Podcast listeners, whether about life, hip hop history, the current state of rap, the future of hip hop, and more, providing ample evidence of dues paid and a genuine love for the culture in its entirety. This episode, featuring dad, partner, graff writer, emcee, thinker, and more, is brought to you by the PlatformCollection.com Podcast Network in association with SDLovesHipHop.com.
