Book III of the Andersson Dexter series.
Storefronts busted, businesses destroyed, accounts frozen. No one knows who’s behind the rash of vandalism in the virtual world, Marionette City, or how to protect themselves from becoming the next victim.
Andersson Dexter has a new lease on life. Things are looking up for the newly independent investigator, when he picks up what seems like an ordinary case of vandalism.
Soon Dex discovers that what appears to be a run of the mill case may be linked to a series of more sinister events which could jeopardize the very existence of the virtual world, Marionette City.

anticlimactic to say the least
i can't stand people who state their opinions as facts. please preface everything below with "I think," or "In my opinion." i am sure that others will feel very, very different.
pros: interesting world, interesting premise. pretty interesting characters, periodically good writing.
cons: sorry, should have had a professional reader - and definitely should have had better production. basically a monotone; periodically mispronounced words; and a bunch of "whistled" s's. difficult to listen to. descriptions were great but dialogue was flat and a little predictable.
BIG cons: nothing actually happens. it's all show and no go - obviuosly there will be a sequel, but even books intended to be trilogies or series or whatever have some kind of excitement and wrap up at the end, not just "well, things will be exciting later." i looked around to see if there were more episodes, but, nope, where it ended is where it ended.
i like the idea of M City and I like the whole firms/consortium/independent thing. actually, i love M City - for something so speculative it held water very well - i can imagine something like this happening, and it's exciting.
there are a bunch of story threads here with promise, but in my view it should have been either much longer or a good deal shorter.
Anderson Dexter #3
While Dex’s personal life eases into comfortable domesticity, the rest of world begins to dissolve. There’s way more going on than Dex has allowed himself to consider. The world is so interesting and plausible. What seem to be solutions to so many problems turn out to be empty distractions.
Another Great Andersson Dexter Story
I really enjoy the "Dex" series. Ms. Wehm brings a bit of the old Gum Shoe into the virtual world of the future.
