BWI Daily: Penn State vs. Northwestern Preview

BWI Daily: Penn State vs. Northwestern Preview

Penn State faces Northwestern on Saturday to start the remainder of the 2022 Big Ten schedule. To get fans ready for the game, senior editor Nate Bauer hosts the BWI Daily Edition with publisher Sean Fitz to preview the upcoming contest. Part of that preview is a look back at the week in Penn State football to review where the Nittany Lions stand heading into the game.

This week the news, while subtle, was significant. There have been rumors that starting quarterback Sean Clifford would not play this weekend, and backup Drew Allar would get the start. While Fitz and Bauer don't have anything concrete to report, they have noticed odd things happening around that story. So they discuss the situation before moving on to practice observations.

Bauer starts open practice observations with what he and Fitz saw of Clifford during the 20 minutes of open availability. Next, they discuss the players with known injuries this week, including tight end Tyler Warren and interior lineman Hunter Nourzad. That conversation gets context from James Franklin's comments after practice, as does the situation with defensive tackle Coziah Izzard. They discuss how the tone has changed around Izzard and defensive end Smith Vilbert, both of which haven't been available to start the season.

Next, they review where the team stands coming out of non-conference play and reflect on the lessons they learned playing Central Michigan last weekend. Naturally, that leads into the preview of Northwestern. It's been a tough start to the season for the 1-3 Wildcats, with three straight home losses. Bauer and Fitz discuss the team's shortcomings and how they have an unusual identity this season compared to the traditional Northwestern plan of attack.

Finally, they put all of this in context with Penn State's upcoming bye week and then give their score predictions for the game.

BWI Daily: Stock up/Stock Down for Penn State players through first month of the season

BWI Daily: Stock up/Stock Down for Penn State players through first month of the season

The first month of the Penn State football season is in the books, and its time to take stock of where the team stands heading into conference play on Saturday against Northwestern. So, host Thomas Frank Carr does that. He gives you five offensive and defensive players whose stock has gone up and the handful of players whose stock has gone down. Subscribe to the BWI Daily Edition, so you don't miss an episode! https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK

Penn State's offense hasn't been lights-out but several players have taken a significant step forward during the first month of the 2022 season. T-Frank starts his list with an unlikely pair of players that many fans might think should be higher. See why he has Nick Singleton, and Kaytron Allen listed fifth.

Next, he heads to the offensive line for a player that has changed the way that Penn State runs the football, thanks to his effectiveness in specific situations. While this player isn't playing the best football among the starting offensive linemen, his presence is essential for the success of the running game's health.

While T-Frank focused on the running game to start, the rest of the offensive players will be passing game contributors, starting with number three. Check out the show to see which player has exceeded the high expectations from the offseason to land on the list.

The second player on the list shouldn't surprise fans who have been hoping to see him play for over a year.

Finally, T-Frank highlights the breakout player of the Penn State offense through the first month of the season, the freshmen excluded. This player has finally realized his abilities on offense and has played a pivotal role in several wins this year.

After discussing the players whose stock has gone down, T-Frank switches to the defense.

He starts with another freshman who is making an impact for the Nittany Lions now that his exceptional talents are beginning to shine through.

From there, he highlights Penn State linebacker Abdul Carter. The freshman didn't have the same expectations in the preseason as his classmates at running back, but T-Frank has a different reason for keeping him lower on the list.

Next, T-Frank transitions to the secondary to highlight one player who has been making splash plays for the Nittany Lions routinely this year. From there, he targets an entire position.

Lastly, T-Frank highlights the breakout player of the defense and the entire team. Check out the show to find out which player that is.

BWI Daily: Penn State vs Central Michigan recap

BWI Daily: Penn State vs Central Michigan recap

Hear the final word on Penn State's 33-14 victory over Central Michigan on the BWI Daily Edition. The BWI Daily is live every Monday at 8 pm to discuss the previous game and take your questions! Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK

Host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Baur sit down for a conversation about where Penn State stands one month into the season after a frustrating offensive performance against a MAC opponent. Penn State turned the ball over three times on defense and picked up a muffed punt but didn't manage to pull away from Central Michigan until the fourth quarter. T-Frank and Bauer will discuss their impression of the game and what happened to keep Penn State from running away with the game.

But it wasn't all bad. Bauer and T-Frank will discuss freshman Kaytron Allen's performance, gaining 111 yards on only 13 carries and breaking seven tackles along the way. They'll also discuss the state of the Penn State running back room one month into the season.

Defensively, Penn State stymied Central Michigan and, once again, batted away over ten passes. They'll discuss the standout players and progress that the Nittany Lions have made since week one. T-Frank will highlight freshman Dani Dennis-Sutton's progression and why he thinks that the five-star defensive end deserves to see more playing time during meaningful game action.

Lastly, they'll discuss the special teams situation and the duality of what's going on with Penn State's third unit. They'll highlight the punting prowess of Barney Amor and the field goal kicking concerns that Penn Sate faces this year.

BWI Live: Penn State grinds out win over Central Michigan

BWI Live: Penn State grinds out win over Central Michigan

Once again, Penn State struggled to blow out a MAC team at home early but eventually got it done against Central Michigan 33-14. Check out what happened on the BWI Live postgame show with Thomas Frank Carr: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK

Penn State got to a hot start with a 14-0 lead against Central Michigan in the first quarter but stagnated in the second, allowing the Chippewas to get 14 points and only scoring another touchdown. However, the Nittany Lions kept chopping wood, getting another touchdown in the third and another in the fourth before putting in backup quarterback Drew Allar. Penn State also struggled to overcome penalties that killed drives in the middle of the game.

The Nittany Lions benefitted from four Central Michigan turnovers, including a muffed punt that set up a go-ahead touchdown. However, the Penn State secondary came to play with two interceptions and more than ten pass breakups.

BWI Daily: Can Penn State's wide receivers break out this week? | Best Bets |

BWI Daily: Can Penn State's wide receivers break out this week? | Best Bets |

Friday on the BWI Daily Edition means Ryan Snyder stops by to give the audience his weekend best bets in college football. But Snyder is also Blue White Illustrated's recruiting insider so he'll drop knowledge on this week's news and preview the upcoming recruiting visitors for Central Michigan. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube, so you don't miss the show!

Snyder joins host Thomas Frank Carr, who starts the show by asking Snyder about an important new recruiting offer for 2023. Penn State is still looking for players at several positions, including defensive end, offensive tackle, and receiver. That last position is in flux for the Nittany Lions, and Snyder fills T-Frank in on a new player Penn State is targeting. Hear from Snyder to learn more about Taeshawun Lyons. Finally, Snyder highlights another offer this week at one of those critical positions in Keyshawn Blackstock.

The list of visitors for Central Michigan is short, but important players are visiting this weekend. Snyder goes through the top recruits visiting on Saturday before he and T-Frank transition to the next topic.

Snyder chooses one recruit each weekend to see in person, and this week, he's headed to Pittsburgh to check out five-star athlete Quinton Martin. Snyder says that the 2024 running back is the prize of not just this class but possibly multiple years. But will any Penn State coaches join him this weekend? Snyder gives T-Frank the rundown of where the staff is headed on Friday night and which recruits they'll see play.

Finally, Snyder and T-Frank get into the show's main event, Ryan Snyder's Best Bets. Here is the action for this weekend that Snyder has targeted.

    TCU (-2) vs. SMU
    Eastern Michigan(-6) vs. Buffalo
Old Dominion (-4.5) vs. Arkansas State
    Northwestern (-7) vs. Miami (Ohio)
Penn State (-27.5) vs. Central Michigan

Of course, the featured game of the week is always Penn State. This week T-Frank gives a preview of what he saw on film from Central Michigan. He discusses which players and what schemes stood out for the Chippewas and how he thinks Penn State should attack offensively.

While the Nittany Lions didn't need much from the receivers last week, can this group put together a breakout performance against their last MAC opponent? T-Frank and Snyder highlight Parker Washington and the depth players behind him as key factors on Saturday. If they can put together an explosive afternoon, it will be a short day's work for the starters.

The most comprehensive PSU football podcast out there

I follow most of the PSU football podcasts/shows and love all of them honestly. But T-Frank’s knowledge of scheme, technique, and position play sets this one apart. Not only does he love Penn State, he loves (and knows) football. His passion and positive energy is contagious and he records an episode EVERYDAY even when he’s supposed to take a day off (his birthday). This one’s a gem. Keep up the great work!

Fitz is back

Sean Fitz is the single best voice in Penn State football analysis and recruiting. The shows that he is on are fantastic. Not a huge fan of the other hosts but to each his own.

Overall, pretty good podcast. Just think asking for donations every 5 minutes is a tad excessive. Beginning, middle and end would be plenty.
