Going in depth on Penn State football, basketball, recruiting and more!

BWI Daily: Penn State transfer portal activity | Rose Bowl bound

BWI Daily: Penn State transfer portal activity | Rose Bowl bound

Despite the 2022 regular season ending a week ago, things are getting even busier for the Penn State coaching staff. The college football transfer portal officially opened on Monday, and a flood of names entered from programs all over the country. Making sense of all that is a full-time job, which is why the BWI Daily Edition focuses on the portal activity in and out of Happy Valley through the first 12 hours. Subscribe to the Daily on YouTube, so you don't miss the live show!

Host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Bauer will discuss the names and positions you need to know from the portal. They'll also take your questions and discuss the topics you want to discuss during the roughly 60-minute live show.

    Penn State portal update

It's been a relatively silent day for Penn State, considering what other schools have been going through since the end of the regular season. Still, the Nittany Lions have lost players in the process, which T-Frank and Bauer will highlight and discuss to start the show. Were there any surprises? They'll also discuss the larger issues around the portal and how it operates.

Next, they'll update fans with the players that have publicly announced Penn State offers on social media. T-Frank and Bauer will talk about those players and the brief overviews of what those players would bring to the offense, defense, or special teams. Next, they'll discuss the top positional needs of the Nittany Lions and what they'll prioritize in the coming months.

Finally, they'll put the day's information into context with everything else going on in the Class of 2023 with high school recruiting.

Next, Bauer and T-Frank will discuss Penn State's bowl destination and opponent. The Nittany Lions will play Utah in the Rose Bowl on Jan 2 in one of the last official games in the history of the event. What did head coach James Franklin say during his comments after the announcement? Bauer and T-Frank will discuss the matchup, and T-Frank will briefly preview what fans should expect from the Utes.

Lastly, Bauer and T-Frank will discuss the Penn State basketball team's beginning of Big Ten play this week against Michigan State and Illinois. Bauer will give a recap of what head coach Micah Shrewsberry had to say during his weekly press conference and what long-standing issue with the program he addressed with reporters.

The transfer portal is wide open, and Penn State has lost some players already. Find out who and which players Penn State is targeting.

BWI Daily: Penn State coaching staff heads south to secure Class of 2023

BWI Daily: Penn State coaching staff heads south to secure Class of 2023

Penn State football is idle this week during conference championship weekend, but the coaching staff is still hard at work. Head coach James Franklin and his assistants are out on the road now that the contact period is open and are visiting committed players and key prospects to try and secure the Class of 2023. Today on the BWI Daily Edition, host Thomas Frank Carr and recruiting insider Ryan Snyder discuss coaching movement and the latest news on several recruiting battles. Subscribe to the BWI Daily Edition on YouTube, so you don't miss the show! https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK

However, T-Frank and Snyder start the show discussing the latest on four-star corner Daniel Harris. Most of the On3 Penn State and national staff have put a pick in for Harris land at Penn State, but it has yet to happen. So what's the situation? Snyder and T-Frank discuss how the rollercoaster recruitment has gone this week.

Next, they discuss another important target that Penn State could hope to secure shortly. Class of 2024 running back Duke Watson has been publicly high on the Nittany Lions, but Snyder says there's some conflict internally about the staff accepting a committment right away. Why? Snyder says that it's not about talent but the opposite issue.

Lastly, Snyder updates T-Frank on the official visit list for Penn State's big weekend, starting next Friday. The Nittany Lions are hosting several significant prospects beginning on Dec. 9, and Snyder gives T-Frank a rundown of the latest additions. The list, and the conversation, are heavy on running back discussion with the uncertainty of veteran Keyvone Lee's status with the team this offseason. If Lee chooses to leave via the transfer portal, the current projection is that the team would have only one healthy scholarship running back. So Snyder and T-Frank will discuss that position's names and priority level next weekend.

Next, the duo discusses the college football playoff expansion and its impact on college football. The playoff committee announced that after next season, the playoff will expand to a proper 12-team format. Snyder and T-Frank discuss the wide-ranging ramifications of the sport and how they think things will play out in the coming years. They also discuss the impact that it will have on the Big Ten, conference alignment, and Penn State.

Lastly, they finish up the show by looking back at Snyder's performance on his Best Bets segment this season.

BWI Daily: The transfer portal threat is real

BWI Daily: The transfer portal threat is real

The college football championship games kick off on Friday before the weekend sets the playoff picture; get the latest buzz on Penn State’s chances of heading to the Rose Bowl in January with the BWI Daily Edition. On today’s wide-ranging show, host Nate Bauer and Blue Wihte Illustrated Publisher Sean Fitz discuss that, All-Big Ten selections, and the latest roster news from this week. Subscribe to the BWI Daily Edition on YouTube, so you don’t miss the show! https://bit.ly/3KzEcqK

Fitz and Bauer start with Nate’s favorite topic, bowl selection. What’s the latest news on Penn State’s bowl destination? This weekend’s game may not matter at all, based on new reports. Find out how the Nittany Lions could skip the line and head to Pasadena in January.

After finishing up the discussion on bowls, the team turns its attention to the players who will or maybe won’t play in the game. Redshirt junior cornerback Joey Porter Jr. opted out of whichever bowl Penn State will play in and head to the NFL. The All-Big Ten corner missed several games to end the season thanks to an appendectomy at the beginning of the month but returned to play on senior day. He finished the game against Michigan State with 11 total defensive snaps and two targets.

So, who else might opt out of the game aside from Porter? Fitz and Bauer discuss the most likely names.

Next, they turn to the All-Big Ten selections that Penn State earned alongside Porter Jr. Both were shocked at where fellow corner Kalen King and safety Ji’Ayir Brown landed and bandied about other names in the discussion about which players landed with what team.

Finally, they dig into the most crucial topic of the show, the transfer portal. Penn State redshirt freshman quarterback Christian Veilleux put his name into the portal this week, marking the first soon-to-be departure when the portal opens on December 5th. There are other likely names, but it’s the unlikely names that Bauer and Fitz discuss.

That’s because Name Image and Likeness is going to dramatically shape college football because teams will begin the attempt to poach players from other schools with lucrative or enticing deals. How will they go about that? Bauer explains how he hears the conversation framed. Meanwhile, Fitz discusses how NIL will affect the incoming recruits set to sign in December.

Good analysis. Great chemistry.

Loved that Fitz popped back up on BWI. This Show has been a go-to for me (along with Lions247 and recently Paydirt w McGloin). Always great analysis for TFC and Bauer’s insights are great and often unique among the PSU beat writers. Adding Fitz puts it on another level. Keep up the great work guys.
