174 episodes

Welcome to season 13 and about 600 episodes! The Geek Girls (and occasional guy!) chat about movies, TV, awards shows, the Soupies (our very own awards), and DEI in the entertainment industry. We love Apple TV+, The Leftovers, Invasion, and The Fall of the House of Usher. One of us won’t watch biopics. One of us watches horror flicks for comfort. And one of us gets teased for not liking comedy.

We’re all into sci-fi, the apocalypse, documentaries, time travel, all-things-Keanu Reeves, “prestige TV,” international films, and anything with Regina King.

13.30: A River Runs Through Time

13.30: A River Runs Through Time

The Geek Girl Soup crew dives into the mind-bending 2023 Japanese film “River,” the latest from director Junta Yamaguchi who also made the trippy time travel movie Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes.
In River, the guests and staff at a historic Kyoto hotel find themselves trapped in a recurring two-minute time loop. Susan, Kelly and Cort analyze the creative ways the characters deal with being stuck, from trying to solve the paradox to embracing the infinite redo for their personal agendas.
They discuss how River both follows and deviates from typical time loop tropes established in films like “Groundhog Day.” The gang also gets philosophical about alternate timelines, parallel universes, and time paradoxes.
Strap in for a fun, insightful conversation unpacking all the twists and turns of this unique sci-fi drama. Plus, hear about our recent concert experience seeing 1980s legends Adam Ant and The English Beat!
Next week: Seasons 1 and 2 of “Game of Thrones” for our May of Thrones series!

13.29: Forking Shirtballs! The Good Place S1

13.29: Forking Shirtballs! The Good Place S1

We are so excited to have Geek Girl Amelia back with us for this episode on season 1 of “The Good Place”!
We’re doing a rewatch of this beautiful four-season show. It’s just 50 episodes, if you’ve never watched and want to now!
“The Good Place” ran from 2016 to 2020. It features Kristen Bell, Jameela Jamil, Ted Danson, Manny Jacinto, William Jackson Harper, and D’Arcy Carden. We follow four people who have ended up in the “good place” in the afterlife and how they get along with each, with the other residents of their neighborhood, and with Architect Michael and “not a robot” Janet.
Deep philosophical lessons (literally) ensue when one of our gang discovers that their presence in the good place was a mistake!
**Opening song prompted by Susan and generated by suno.ai.
Next week: “River” (2023) directed by Junta Yamaguchi. It’s rentable wherever you rent movies and shows!

13.28: 3 Wild & Crazy Girls Get to Know STEVE! (martin)

13.28: 3 Wild & Crazy Girls Get to Know STEVE! (martin)

The Smothers Brothers, Johnny Carson, Saturday Night Live, “The Jerk,” “All of Me,” “Only Murders in the Building.” Steve Martin has had a wild and crazy career.
This week, te Geek Girls watched the stellar “STEVE! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces” on Apple TV+. We laughed and laughed while learning things about Steve Martin we never knew before.
The first piece (labeled “then”) is all about Steve’s start in entertainment through the beginning  his acting career. The second piece (labeled “now”) covers Steve’s movie/TV career and other current events in Steve’s life.
We highly recommend this show/these two films. If you don’t have Apple TV+, use this an opportunity to test it out for a months, and enjoy Apple’s other fabulous original programming.
NOTE: We spoil some parts of the documentary, but we barely skim the surface.
Next week: “The Good Place” season 1!
