How to use archives to enhance your historical fiction, with Steve Dacus

How to use archives to enhance your historical fiction, with Steve Dacus

Research is so important to piecing together the material world of your novel. Not only are archives an important tool in helping you avoid anachronisms that can be jarring for readers, but good archival research can have a huge positive impact, helping you access primary details that make your setting and characters come alive.

In this episode, Julia and Theo speak with Steve Dacus, founder of The Research Arsenal, which offers keyword searchable access to thousands of American Civil War documents including photographs, letters, diaries, ordnance returns, quartermaster specifications and more.

Steve is passionate about helping authors bring the past to life. Listen in to get over the intimidation factor when conducting primary research and to learn how primary materials can help you capture characters’ sentiment and reactions to major events and daily life, adding nuance to your characterisation and description.

Engaging and Well Produced

I just found this podcast and was surprised that it just started in recent weeks but when I listened to it, it didn’t sound like their first rodeo. The hosts are well versed with thoughtful questions in a conversational manner…not stiff but also not stepping on each other as can happen in these kinds of shows. The production value makes it very listenable as well. Coming from a broadcast journalism background, that means something to me.
Didn’t even mention the content, which was interesting and helpful to an aspiring writer like myself working on a historical novel. A resting spot for encouraging conversation and insight. Looking forward to more.

Ep. 1

Finally got to listen to the Madeline Martin episode. Loved hearing about all of her research. As a HF reader, I appreciate the extensive details that make the book that much more real as I’m reading. Also saw that Julia and Madeline got together in person in London recently. Love the HF writer community camaraderie! Looking forward to episode 2!
