the third edition of the International Scenographers Festival IN3 2010 is dedicated entirely to the topic of exhibiting. “exhibit! scenography in exhibition design” is destination and program at the same time. the four days festival will debate various aspects of designing, exhibiting and the
executing of exhibitions. due to this year’s claim we invited about sixty internationally recommended professionals to share their experiences in exhibiting and to discuss the visions of this cultural format. Further- more two in3 workshops will be presented at the festival and within
the context of the in3 challenge – announced for the first time – we will be happy to award rookies among scenographers.

Scenography – flash-in-the-pan or revolution in de- sign? The shape of exhibiting and the aura of objects. Gladiators of the cultural world – directors, architects and scientists – debate power, influence, arrogance and impotence, dynamics, creative lee- way and budgets, the future of exhibiting, the potency of design, auratics, putative stage magic and invisible communication.

Following the successful first festival «spatial arts – life in search of style» in 2006, that dealt with the trailblazers of scenography from various disciplines and the second event «staging the stage – scenography inspired by performing arts» in 2008, that was dedicated to the exponents of Scenography in performing arts, the festival 2010 will focus on examining the actual core business of scenography, i.e. “exhibiting and staging” in and around museums: «Exhibit! – scenography in exhibition design» will consequently be its title!

The event will be presented from the 2nd thru 5th December 2010 in the Basel “Kaserne”. Target groups are the curators of the museum city Basel as well as locally and internationally active museum directors, curators and all those who are interested in the international museum and exhibition business. The festival however primarily addresses scenography students, their professors from partner academies of the Institute of Interior Design and Scenography, as well as the rapidly growing community of training institutions in Europe and abroad that, from their different perspectives, have dedicated themselves to formation and education regarding scenography.

With the Festival 2010, the Institute of Interior Design and Scenography of the HGK | FHNW is happy to provide a platform and voice for the rapidly developing and changing discipline of scenography – as well as to offer the possibility of publicly discussing the main contents of the possible and especially the current definitional experiments in scenography. The Institute observes and accompanies the identification process of a discipline, from practical proximity and academic distance and, with the festival, offers a forum for exchange and contextual analysis to the exponents.

As a result of the festival 2008, the festival 2010 will feature an innovation: the cooperation with eight European academies who intend to participate.

The Bremen-based creative company Urbanscreen possesses years of experience in the field of urban large-scale projections. By means of essentially experimental projects, Urbanscreen systematically seeks new possibilities to stage the urban space in a scenographic and dramaturgical sense.

Urbanscreen is working on media concepts for the public sphere with a network of artists, architects and technical experts. Large-scale projection on urban surfaces is their core field of activity. Urbanscreen conceives and produces custom-fit media installations which create exceptional impressions through high artistic standards, the expert architectural eye and the professional implementation.
The group of artists developed a distinct approach in the field of architecture projections: The house itself becomes the stage for poetical productions that are more reminiscent of a play than of a classical media art installation. Projected figures appear in windows like in reality — the façade mutates into an active stage element. The method was baptized «Lumentektur» by the artists from Bremen and concentrates on projections focusing on the architecture as an active player.

    CHARLIE MORROW | USA

Charlie Morrow is principal and creative director of Charles Morrow Productions, LLC. He is an internationally recognized, prize winning sound artist, composer and producer of cultural and cross-cultural projects. He is based in the USA and in Finland.

Morrow espouses the new/old in bringing together high tech solutions with traditional techniques driven by nature. He is trained in ethnomusicology, chemistry and engineering, apply these disciplines aethetically and socially. He has specialized in pubic events and broadcasts in order to bring a wider understanding to the notion that there are not higher and lower cultures.

His studies and explorations in Asian music including that of India and of the Arctic, brought him into contact with musicians, music instrument builders, scholars, architects and audiences.

Of inspiration to Charlie is the Indian tradition of learning by sitting beside the teacher. And making music with nature, such as his performances with field frogs and Concert for Fish. An improviser, he has performed with Indian musicians and with a Kathak dancer. As well, he produced the outdoor concerts for the Music Festival of India in New York City.

In the mindset of traditional Indian music, he has developed algorithms for using weather data online to drive sound installations and wrote a set of formulas for making the performance of music with respect to time, date, location in the physical universe. His celebrations of the summer solstice brought together new/old performance in international media and pubic space on the turning of the seasons.

Charlie Morrow is a conceptualist whose music works range over many styles and forms, from events for media and public spaces to new media productions, museum installations and programming for broadcast and festivals. Assembling expert project groups, Morrow employs a collaborative style that fuses arts, artists, and environment; technological expertise creates the basis for a significant portion of his work, much of which utilizes a combination of the newest and very old technologies. Morrow's sound installations include The Knoll Furniture Retrospective (Louvre Museum, Paris), The General Gas Exhibit (Chicago Museum of Science and Industry), The 2nd Acustica International (Whitney Museum NYC) and the Torino Winter Olympics. He composed music for multimedia presentations with orchestra and 3D sound for a Volvo U.S. annual sales meeting, for AT&T's celebration in Geneva, Switzerland inaugurating the ISDN system and for the chime of a special edition Swatch watch by Naim June Paik.

Charlie is the lead inventor of MorrowSound® True 3D which featured prominently in Nokia World 08 Barcelona, Foster+Partner's Forteleza Hall at SC Johnson HQ, Racine WI and the Smithsonian Institutions Arctic Study Center, Anchorage AK.

Charlie has deep interest in sound and health issues. Such a connection to emotional and physical health is to be considered for the Indian Music Experience soundscape installations, indoor and in the gardens along with learning, identity and pride.

    BEAT HÄCHLER | CH

    BEAT HÄCHLER | CH

Beat Hächler (born 1962) is exhibition organiser and long-standing co-manager of the “Stapferhaus Lenzburg”. He studied history, media studies and German history of literature in Bern and Madrid. From 1992 until 2010, he assumed different roles for the “Stapferhaus Lenzburg”, the most recent being co-manager starting 2002. On October 1, 2011, Hächler will take over the direction of the Swiss Alpine Museum in Bern.

In the past few years, the “Stapferhaus Lenzburg” established a reputation as a unique “house of the present”. Without a collection and predetermined exhibition spaces, the Stapferhaus stages every-day-topics in the form of exhibitions and comes across to a wide audience. Beat Hächler decisively influenced this development as author and co-author of exhibitions like “A walk on the wild side”, “Last minute”, “Autolust” (car lust), “Glaubenssache” (matter of faith) or currently “HOME. Willkommen im digitalen Leben” (welcome to digital life). His exhibitions always focus on the visitors as experts of the present and involve them actively as social protagonists. The focus is not so much on design in the classical sense, but rather on the creation of “Gegenwartsräume” / present spaces and their potential to render the contemporary cultural practises visible and negotiable; performance, participation and interaction are the core elements of this ”social scenography”.

Parallel to his work, Beat Hächler completed the practically-oriented doctorate programme scenography of the “Zürcher Hochschule der Künste” (Zurich University of the Arts) and the University of Vienna. In his PhD project, he investigates methodical questions of exhibiting the present and resumes this approach under the new central concept of a ”social scenography”.
