Eating Disorders: "You're Really Skinny... But Not In a Good Way."

“You’re really skinny.” “Thanks!” “I don’t mean that in a good way.” “Eating a candy bar put a smile on my face. Eating became my comfort.”

Eating disorders receive a lot of media attention, and often seem romanticized or presented as a rite of passage through adolescence. In this month’s powerful episode of Inside Our Mind’s The Mental Illness Spotlight, our panelists Amy, Cara, and Marissa discuss their experiences living with and living through eating disorders.

Among other related topics, join The Mental Illness Spotlight as we discuss the emergence of their eating disorders, challenges in receiving treatment, recovery, body dysmorphic disorder, social media, and the connection between bullying and their eating disorders.

Content warning: self-harm, suicidal thoughts, bullying, descriptions of binging and purging.

Great

I just listened to Rachel Kallem Whitman: Owning Your Crazy. It made me feel so seen. I’ve struggled with SI and SH my whole life. It makes me feel less alone to hear someone else share their story. I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, PTSD, GAD, RAD, etc. for years and then it recently changed from Bipolar to Schizoaffective Disorder Bipolar Type. To hear that someone else suffers similar things to things I’ve gone through really does make me feel less alone and gives me hope. Thank you for sharing your story.

A Texas Borderline

Thank you thank you thank you X infinity!!! I have suffered from BPD and I’ve never heard anyone get it. All 3 of your guest told my story. The neediness, the anger, the feelings that you can’t trust anyone. This made me feel a little less alone in this world. Keep up the good work.

Appalling discussion

As a mental health professional, I was appalled at the first episode of season 2! I could not believe some of the statements the guest was making about involuntary treatment. There is obviously a range of symptoms and behaviors individuals can display, and sometimes involuntary treatment is necessary to prevent suicides and homicides. The discussion was one sided and some of the information provided was nowhere near accurate. Why have a guest who clearly does not have the experience and expertise to discuss this topic? If you want to listen to a good podcast on mental illness, try The Hilarious World of Depression.
