Richard is one of my favourite people in the world. It is that simple. He has taken that big leap into following your dreams and passions, and also saying enough is enough in a job that was no longer fulfilling and nourishing, and that is inspirational.
In this wide ranging conversation we dive into a myriad of topics from the joys of sabbaticals, meditation, writing, golf in general and much more. Our conversations tend to be tangential and that is one of the joys of spending time with Richard.

Today I am speaking with Emily Davidson. Emily is the Participation and Inclusion Manager at Golf New Zealand, an organisation she has worked for since 2017. Her biggest career highlight to date was Golf NZ winning the NZ Sport and Recreation Award for Leadership in Diversity and Sport for 2022. Not being a golfer herself when she joined Golf NZ, Emily was able to bring a fresh perspective and ask the crucial disrupter questions against the doctrine of 'this is just the way we do it in golf'.
This was a super interesting conversation which helped to broaden my thinking around some of the challenges facing different groups when it comes to golf. I had some great takeaways of simple things that can be done to improve the user friendliness of our website, clubhouse, and some longer time/bigger project ideas also. If you have any level of diversity within your membership then I recommend taking a listen.
Thoughts and reflections
Beginners having to wear full golfing attire can be a big barrier to entry. Cost is an obvious one but also imposter syndrome being created of the "all the gear, no idea" mentality and being embarrassed dressing like a golfer but not being able to play.Etiquette can come later when it's needed. Don't start off with all of these rules. It doesn't come across as welcoming to the sport.What can we do to change the image perception of golf?Why is a shirt with a collar automatically smart and a shirt without one not?Tradition and history of the game isn't a good enough reason for current dress codes, why? Because if it was, men would still be wearing plus fours and women long floaty dresses!Don't assume everyone knows where they need to go or report to when they arrive. This starts with the website.

In today's episode I speak with Monique Landman, the Chief Empathy Officer and Co-founder of Unchain. After a successful corporate career in strategy and communications, Monique found her heart eight years ago and a new calling in life to bring empathetic leadership to the world so that people can lead with more humanity. It has never been more important than now to have empathy and compassion as a leader. With the anxiety and uncertainty of Covid, burnout among employees, and a loneliness epidemic in many countries now is the time to stand up as a leader and face these tough situations with compassion and an understanding of how to do so.
After tuning in to a CMAE Friday Forum with Monique I was immediately interested in having her as a guest. And one of the questions by a club manager at the end in particular made me think this is an important conversation to have. How do we deal with emotion, burnout, anxiety in the work place? How should leaders approach this with their staff? Is there a wrong and right way? If you care about your team and want help with these tough conversations then take a listen.

Today I am excited to be joined by global luxury hospitality leader Etienne Haro (LinkedIn). Etienne is the Hotel Manager of La Mamounia in Marrakesh. Prior to this Etienne’s roles have been across a who’s who of luxury hotel brands. He was the Executive Assistant Manager at the world famous Burj Al Arab, Director of Food & Beverage at Fairmont Hotels in Dubai and Kiev, for Hyatt in their Asia Pacific Divisional Office. These roles followed six years in Dubai leading the food and beverage operation at a number of InterContinental Hotels. And while doing all this Etienne has even found time to complete an MBA from the prestigious EHL Hospitality Business School.   
Etienne talks about what made him switch from a planned career in ... to hospitality, what drew him to a life of service in hospitality and puts a smile on his face. We discuss talent equity and balancing the workload across all employees; not overloading your superstars. Etienne describes the importance of alignment with your operation, the power and importance of storytelling, taking control over all the facets that deliver on amazing guest experiences, and the non-obvious things he would look at in a F&B operation to move the level up, plus much more. This was one of my favourite conversations and one that I personally took copious amounts of notes on after re-listening a few times!
