Dealing with Plateaus + Training Games

Dealing with Plateaus + Training Games

After a frustrating training day for myself, as well as one of my students, I thought it'd be great to talk about plateaus. We talk about how to deal with them in your training, as well as how to deal with them mentally, and when it's time to take a break. We also talk about how to introduce more fun into your training, and how live games can help make your training more fun!

The Return!!! Love/Hate Relationship w/ Deep Half Guard & Upcoming Instructional

The Return!!! Love/Hate Relationship w/ Deep Half Guard & Upcoming Instructional

We're back! It's been a long time. Life has been wild this past year, and things are starting to get easier--I didn't want to upload until things could be consistent. Thanks for being patient, and for the kind messages! In this episode I talk about my love/hate relationship with deep half guard, and why I'm currently staying away from it as a primary guard. I also talk a little bit about the instructional that I'll be filming this July. I think it'll be unique, something new to the table, and I hope that folks are able to enjoy it!

    Much love!!!

Rafa Mendes ADCC/NoGi Innovations + Cole Abate and ADCC 2022 -66kg (Part 1)

Rafa Mendes ADCC/NoGi Innovations + Cole Abate and ADCC 2022 -66kg (Part 1)

We're back! On this episode we're talking about Rafa Mendes, his protege Cole Abate, and Rafa's contributions to the NoGi world. Below are some links from some of the techniques and rolling moments discussed in the episode. Thanks for bearing with me. I've had a summer filled with a lot of loss and illness; life goes on, and I'll continue to strive to make the best of life! I appreciate everyone's support so much! Rafa told us that was a critical element of his JiuJitsu. A massive thing that I didn't discuss is Rafa was one of the first people to really seek out the bottom arm seatbelt (weak side) back control position, and strongly advocated body triangles over hooks. Rafa and his brother Gui also notoriously avoided playing half guard, and they thought it was a poor position for smaller grapplers on bottom position. They were also huge proponents of 'active toes' and not playing top positions on the tops of the feet.

Thoughts on Tye Ruotolo vs Garry Tonon & Future Projects

Thoughts on Tye Ruotolo vs Garry Tonon & Future Projects

In the aftermath of Tye Ruotolo vs Garry Tonon, I expect to see Tye being a strong favorite to make the 88kg finals at ADCC, and I see Garry Tonon going into ADCC potentially looking better than ever at 77kg. People not looking at Tye as one of the best pound-for-pound guys on the planet are insane, and people writing Garry off after this loss are also insane.

Drew is the BEST explainer

I love this podcast. Drew is an amazing communicator—he has a way of explaining jiujitsu concepts in a very clear way that makes everything easy to visualize, which is incredibly impressive given that this is a podcast and jiujitsu is a very visual and physical art form.

While he has several years of experience on the mats, and is an amazing jiujitsu historian, Drew is incredibly humble and doenst speak in a way that would isolate beginners to the grappling game, which I really appreciate.

Finally, I love how Drew often links videos to his podcasts that exemplify the concepts he’s discussing in the episodes—it gives you a way to really see what he’s describing, though he explains things so well, you aren’t surprised when you watch the videos he links!

I *highly* recommend listening to Drew’s deep dive on the North South Choke, and his episode devoted to the Guillotine Choke—he’s clearly an expert on these techniques, and the Guillotine episodes is one of my fave jiujitsu podcast episodes EVER!

So glad The Darce Knight finally has such an amazing platform—please keep the content coming Drew! 💙

A BJJ Podcast that will improve your next roll.

I listen to, and enjoy, lots of BJJ themed podcasts. This is the first one that translated immediately to my performance on the mat.

It’s difficult to give technical instruction in audio only form, but Drew Darce (or Darce Knight as many of us have known him) has broken this wall.

The BJJ rabbit hole divers like me have been reading (and using) his advice for years on forums, and this podcast delivers his BJJ nuances in a way that can affect your next roll.

If you like choking people, this is your podcast. If you have a technique that you just can’t get on decent opponents, this is the podcast for you. Heck, if you like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, this is a must listen.

Listen and subscribe, otherwise a lower belt will be choking you out because he/she listens to this podcast very soon!
