Intuition, the Christian Mommy Blogger's Wife, & #IndigenousExcellence with Koatzin Ashley-Cruz

Intuition, the Christian Mommy Blogger's Wife, & #IndigenousExcellence with Koatzin Ashley-Cruz

Episode 3 opens up with gratitude for May Flowers and friendship, soul-excavating writing, and surprise forgiveness. Also, I talk about #KnowThisPsychosis, my lil instagram project that you can find @JadeLenier to raise awareness of less-talked about mental illness experiences.

My anxiety is slightly soothed by a positive.news story I found this week talking about how the private sector is stepping up to the plate by reducing carbon emissions, even though our president is trying to turn the planet into Death Valley. https://www.positive.news/2017/economics/27043/regardless-trump-us-businesses-speeding-toward-low-carbon-world/

I talked about the two squads that I have in my mind, and how one of them has banded together to create http://thecompassioncollective.org, which has raised millions for Syrian refugees and for homeless American youth (correction). The founder of said collective, Glennon Doyle Melton recently got married to Abby Wambach and I am fangirling...Especially because Abby had a sweatshirt on on instagram that said “Christian Mommy Blogger’s Wife” !!!!!!!!! https://www.instagram.com/p/BUHaLZAFUdo

We get to talk in depth to someone who inspires me constantly who also happens to be my friend of 6 years, Koatzin Ashley-Cruz. Koatzin has been incredibly resilient through mental health struggles, paying for their education out of pocket for many years, and navigating a world that isn’t inherently friendly to them as an undocumented person. Koatzin received a bachelor’s degree from California State University, Dominguez Hills a few days ago, and I had to shine some light on this #IndigenousExcellence that they embody!!! Their instagram handle is @k0atzin.

Today’s Science Says explores the topic of intuition. What it is, how it works, and when it’s a great idea or a not so great idea to trust it when making decisions. Sources: https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/radical-remission/201405/the-science-behind-intuition

Pick Me Ups this week offer you options for feeling better in the form of comfort food http://www.somethingswanky.com/peanut-butter-chocolate-lava-mug-cake/, ranting and raving (a scratch pad), or self-soothing (a box full of calm courtesy of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) http://creativityintherapy.com/2016/05/create-a-sensory-self-soothing-kit/.

Your Pep Talk this week revolves around the idea that the recovery makes the resume possible, in more ways than you can imagine.

Cardi B, Anti-Colonialism, Coffee Meditation, and A Beach Field Trip

Cardi B, Anti-Colonialism, Coffee Meditation, and A Beach Field Trip

I describe why Cardi B is my new problematic fave.
The island country of Vanuatu is killin it with their food choices. https://www.positive.news/2017/lifestyle/health/26429/islands-propose-ban-western-junk-food/
I indulge my love for data and give you the hookup to UPenn's Authentic Happiness Lab and all their quizzes! https://www.authentichappiness.sas.upenn.edu/
I share with you my favorite, most simple meditation that I do all the time, using nothing but a hot beverage. http://farandwise.com/coffee-meditation/

I give myself (and you) a pep talk on the beach, because my mental health hasn't been great lately and you can't give what you don't have in the first place. You hear me wake up and get out the door. I befriend some seals and crabs, eat a pb & banana sandwich, and reminisce about various things.
(Side note, audio quality isn't the best in this section because I was recording from my iPhone. Also lots of pauses because I don't have the energy to edit this but I'm keeping to my publishing schedule anyway!)

Love my listeners!!! Subscribe pls. :) :) :)

Argentinian Dad Jokes, The Body Keeps The Score, S'mores Pi, & Mama Jackson

Argentinian Dad Jokes, The Body Keeps The Score, S'mores Pi, & Mama Jackson

The Pep Talk kicked things off by introducing segments called: The Little Things, Sometimes The World Doesn't Suck, Science Says, Pick Me Ups, and The Pep Talk.

The Pep Talk's inaugural episode covered little things I'm grateful for like grandmas, grocery stores, and S'Mores pie surprises for my wife on Pi Day. It had an amazing interview with Rita Jackson (AKA Mama Jackson AKA MJ) about her work with Donate Life and her transformation of her grief into motivation and service to others. For more info about MJ's work check out this link: http://olf.convio.net/site/TR/Events/General?team_id=2046&pg=team&fr_id=1071 And her blog can be found here: https://askmamajackson.com

We heard positive stories from the news like the first black American to board the International Space Station and Muslim activists raising funds to support Jewish hate crime victims, and we gave a slow clap for Melissa McCarthy for her service to America in its time of need. In the meat of the episode we explore Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk's book The Body Keeps The Score, a deep and fascinating dive into trauma and PTSD treatment with takeaways that benefit anyone no matter their mental health.

The Pep Talk showed you some pick me ups like dad jokes on niceonedad.com, "highly satisfying videos" like this one https://youtu.be/FnllQ0qahhg, breakfast popsicles for those that are not morning people, and The Struggle Bus Podcast for content that is also awesome and related to mental health. Lastly, we rounded out the show with a Pep Talk to help you think about authenticity and loving the skin you live in.
