When Blake Snell was pulled in the 5th inning of an absolute gem he was throwing, it unleashed a renewed battle between stat nerds and baseball fans.  This podcast seeks to breakdown how statistics work and help you create a balanced approach to understanding baseball through what you see as well as what the numbers say. This is a great introduction for understanding both ends of the spectrum while helping you find the middle ground.  

Using the Rays, A's, Dodgers, Yankees, and the magnificent St Louis Cardinals as examples, I attempt to explain the equilibrium that teams in baseball try to achieve.  This is how teams of varying payrolls continue to compete year in and year out while other teams seem to go through wild shifts of greatness and then into bits of abysmal performances.  

A look through trades over the past several years to point out lesser talked about factors such as team need, money, age, culture, ticket sales, and more.  Lots of trades will be used as examples including the Dodger's Mookie Betts trade, the Cubs trade for Aroldis Chapman, and many Mariners trades that involved players like Robinson Cano, Chris Taylor, and David Ortiz.

The Rays made an incredible run to the world series despite their cheapskate owners.  I am going to break down the side of the story that we often don't hear.  This perspective is that we are conditioned to complain about players making millions of dollars to play a game, but we as fans, and team ownership is the real problem.  We assume that all athletes are millionaires, and that team ownership are the saviors.  Listen to this perspective and while you won't agree with all of it, you will have a more rounded view of what is truly at stake for players in free agency and CBA negotiations.
