Ep. 9: Pawtographs for Pooches and the Paranormal with Tim Maile

Ep. 9: Pawtographs for Pooches and the Paranormal with Tim Maile

Welcome back to The Rescue Revolution. Today, you’ll meet Tim Maile, the founder of Pawtographs for Pooches and Fox City Paranormal Team. In a pivotal moment that changed his life forever, Tim shares how his dog, Murray, saved him from a suicide attempt in 2007.

Through Murray, Tim founded Pawtographs for Pooches in 2013 which holds events nationwide in which all proceeds go to local rescues near the event. Tim also discusses how a paranormal event in his own home led to the establishment of Fox City Paranormal Team in 2008.  This team was featured on Syfy’s Paranormal Witness in an episode titled, “The Innocent”.  Here, Tim and his team do a two-year residential paranormal investigation that uncovers a decades-old murder of a child  which involved a major coverup back in 1967. This team has done 300+ residential investigations in over 15 years and counting.  Together with Pawtographs for Pooches, they have raised over $116,000 dollars benefiting animal shelters nationwide.

Join me as Tim and I discuss 4 different amazing rescue stories. Please donate to pawtographsforpooches.com to continue Murray’s legacy where you can help save a life today.

Ep. 8: Serenity Animal Hospital & The Greyhound Doc

Ep. 8: Serenity Animal Hospital & The Greyhound Doc

Welcome back to another episode of The Rescue Revolution. Today, we’ll be discussing American Greyhounds and their cousins, the Spanish Galgos with Dr. Karen Michalski.  As a veterinarian and the founder of Serenity Animal Hospital in Stirling Heights, Michigan, she has made it her life’s work to specialize in greyhounds.  This is why she is now famously known as The Greyhound Doc.

In addition to her work with the American Greyhound, Dr. Michalski has traveled to Spain to help rescue and bring back galgos to the United States.  Due to the lack of animal protection laws in Spain to help neglected and abused galgos, she has been advocating for them to be included under these protection laws in the upcoming law review. Episode 4 (SOS Galgos--Rescuing the Spanish Greyhound), from a previous broadcast, covers the plight of the galgos in more detail.

Furthermore, the Greyhound Doc will touch on the American Greyhound and dog racing , including the impact this practice has had on these dogs’ lives.

Unfortunately, after this episode was recorded, the Spanish government decided NOT to include galgos under animal protection laws in the Spring of 2023. This is a huge setback to everyone that has been lobbying to protect these dogs.  Stick around, learn more and find out how you can help to save a life today.

Ep. 7: The Florida Manatee (The Unusual Mortality Event)

Ep. 7: The Florida Manatee (The Unusual Mortality Event)

As a Florida native, co-existing with manatees was a normal part of everyday life. Also known as  sea cows, they are extremely important for our ecosystem and are in grave danger of being enlisted as an endangered species.  Many around the world do not know about the perils facing manatees today.  They are currently dying by the 100s off the coast of Florida due mostly to seagrass die-offs and algal blooms.

Today, I will be speaking with Irene Arpayoglou, a Marine biologist in Florida, regarding manatees. Irene has a dual master’s degree in marine biology and coastal zone management.  She has worked conducting sea turtle surveys on Florida’s east coast for 10 years, while teaching marine biology and environmental science to college students. As a marine biologist, she has assisted state agencies in manatee rescues and works to protect the habitats that these animals live in. The “unusual mortality event” that occurred in Florida and Georgia led state agencies to research sea grass losses throughout the manatees’ region. Irene has collaborated on these efforts along with other researchers.  She currently works with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection as a Regional Aquatic Preserve Manager.

    Did you know:

    1) The manatee’s closest relative is the elephant? (myfwc.com)

    2) A manatee can swim leisurely at 5mph, is a versatile swimmer and has a voracious appetite? (worldanimalprotection.us)

    3) Even though they have a small brain, manatees are highly intelligent.  They have been shown to perform just as well as dolphins when given a certain task. (worldanimalprotection.us)

    4) Manatees have no natural predators and, therefore, live a long life at 60 years or more.  (worldanimalprotection.us)

    5) Despite their long lifespan, manatees tend to have low reproductive rates where a female’s gestation period is 13 months, giving birth to an average of one calf every three to five years. As more and more manatees die off during this unusual mortality event, it will take some time for the population to bounce back once again. (worldanimalprotection.us)

    6) A manatee can move each side of its lip pads independently. (myfwc.com)

    7) Manatees do not have eyelids or eyelashes. Their eye muscles close in a circular motion, similar to a camera. (myfwc.com)

    8) They don't have any biting teeth, only grinding teeth. (myfwc.com)

    9) The bones in a manatee's flippers are similar to a human hand. (myfwc.com)

    10) They only have 6 neck bones, unlike most other mammals who have 7. This is the reason why they are unable to turn their heads sideways and must turn their entire body around to look behind them. (myfwc.com)

Join me now to learn more about these docile creatures, the current unusual mortality event and how YOU can help save a manatee today.

Ep. 6: World Bird Sanctuary: Bald Eagles and Vultures (The World's Largest Bird Sanctuary)

Ep. 6: World Bird Sanctuary: Bald Eagles and Vultures (The World's Largest Bird Sanctuary)

Meet Dawn Griffard, the CEO of World Bird Sanctuary, the world's largest bird sanctuary specializing in raptors or birds of prey. Located outside of St. Louis, Missouri, this non-profit (501c3) organization is found on 305 acres of Missouri hardwood forest. On the grounds, you'll find aviaries housing birds from all over the world, educational bird shows, up close and personal bird encounters, natural trails, as well as picnic pavilions. The large outdoor avian exhibits provide housing for a variety of non-releasable birds and the on-site hospital helps to rehabilitate injured birds of prey. True to its mission, World Bird Sanctuary practices the following four pillars: Conservation, Rehabilitation, Education and Advocacy.

On today’s episode, we’ll be discussing America’s symbol of freedom, the bald eagle alongside the world’s much needed cleaning crew, vultures. You’ll learn how World Bird Sanctuary helped to remove the bald eagle from the endangered species list. You’ll also discover the importance of vultures in our ecosystem and how 95-98% of the world’s vulture population has been decimated, causing a catastrophic effect on world health. Without vultures, illnesses will run rampant and people will suffer from rabies, botulism, anthrax and other serious infectious diseases which can be deadly. You'll learn about India's first-hand experience with the loss of its vultures due to the use of diclofenac, an anti-inflammatory medication for its livestock. As a result, an astronomical outbreak of rabies consumed the nation, which costed the Indian government $30 billion. Moreover, you'll learn about major vulture population losses found in Europe, Africa and Asia.

In order to help with the vulture population crisis, World Bird Sanctuary recently formed a partnership with VulPro, an organization based in South Africa. We'll hear about Dawn's recent adventure out there and the valuable information she brought back to the United States. The collaboration between these two organizations will help to save the vulture, restore a healthy ecosystem and stabilize habitats across the world.

It is important to note that birds are indispensable. Dawn Griffard describes this in her own words: “The loss of just one species can cause a domino effect, affecting entire habitats, and the animals and humans that live within. If we save the birds, we preserve the future.” Please take time to learn about these birds. By preserving them, we are preserving our own collective existence.

Ep. 5: Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat (The World's Only Polar Bear Sanctuary)

Ep. 5: Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat (The World's Only Polar Bear Sanctuary)

Known as the world’s largest bear and the Arctic’s top predator, polar bears serve as an indicator species for climate change. Because it resides largely within the Arctic Circle, many people will never see a polar bear in its natural habitat. But one sanctuary gives you an utmost marvelous chance to see these beautiful bears roaming around 24 acres of pristine, natural environment, which is as close to the wild as one can possibly get.

Located in Cochrane, Ontario, The Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat is the only sanctuary in the world to house polar bears, where they are free to live their lives as they choose. The sanctuary’s efforts are focused on the welfare of the polar bears, participating in conservation projects, fundraising and education. These amazing animals are avid swimmers and can swim for days at a time from one piece of ice to another. They have been clocked to swim up to 10 kph (6 mph) and can swim 100km (62 miles) in a single event with ease. How is that for stamina?

On today’s episode of The Rescue Revolution, I’ll be speaking with Amy Baxendell, the manager of The Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat. Amy has worked with five of the eight extant species of bears, and is now concentrating on the conservation of polar bears. She will share her extensive knowledge about these wondrous bears and their habitats, describe their unique features and share fun facts about polar bears. One fun fact we will be discussing is the polar bear’s color. Did you know that polar bears are actually black? Did you also know that polar bear fur is not actually white? Amy will also discuss how climate change is affecting their future survival, the importance of having them on our planet and how this sanctuary is making a difference in polar bear conservation.

Stick with me, Iman Goueli, to learn more about this nature’s special gift to us and how we can contribute to its conservation. Together, we can save the polar bear on planet EARTH.

    10 Fun Polar Bear Facts:

    1) Polar bears can sniff out their prey from up to 1 km away! (wwf.org.uk)

    2) Polar bear fur is actually transparent with a hollow core that reflects light. (Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat)

    3) Although polar bear skin is black, they are born with pink skin. (Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat)

    4) Polar bears do not hibernate but live in ice dens with their cubs until they are ready to leave the den. (Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat)

    5) Polar bears are classified as marine mammals b/c they live mostly on the sea ice. (Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat)

    6) Chemical secreting foot glands help males track females by sniffing their footprints. (rcinet.ca)

    7) Less than 2% of polar bear hunts are successful. (Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat)

    8) Scientists can extract polar bear DNA just from their footprints. (wwf.org.uk)

    9) Polar bear fertilized eggs do not implant immediately after mating. They wait until the conditions are right to increase implantation/survival rates. (Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat)

    10) Polar bears have a 2-to-4 inch layer of fat around their bodies to keep them warm. (Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat)

Did you know that the polar bear is a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) as classified by the United States Government? The loss of polar bear habitat, or sea ice, puts the polar bear at risk of becoming endangered with extinction in the foreseeable future. This is defined as 45 years from the time of ESA listing, which is the standard established by the ESA for designating a threatened species. (Polarbearagreement.org)

Ep. 4: SOS Galgos--Rescuing the Spanish Greyhound

Ep. 4: SOS Galgos--Rescuing the Spanish Greyhound

    SOS Galgos
The purity of a person’s heart can be quickly measured by how they regard animals. This quote couldn’t be further from the truth. One such amazing heart is that of Anna Clements, the co-founder and director of SOS Galgos, based in Barcelona, Spain. Her work is the absolute definition of the unbridled beauty of humanity. Along with her partners and the majority of the Spanish people, she has taken on the quandary of the Galgos or Spanish greyhounds by standing firmly against the torturing, abandoning and killing of thousands of these dogs every year by galgueros, or hunters in Spain.  Anna has been an animal advocate for over 20 years and has collaborated with people from all over the world to liberate Galgos and to deliver them to safety.  In addition to running the rescue, Anna Clements implemented a unique educational experience at SOS Galgos where school-aged children come to play with and learn about Galgos first-hand. She firmly believes the solution lies in educating the next generation to decrease animal abandonment and mistreatment for decades to come.
We will also hear from Ronda Hart about her visit to Spain from America and her collaboration with Galgo rescues, which ultimately resulted in her transporting some of these beautiful creatures back to the United States. I also implore you to sign the petition on sosgalgos.org to include all working dogs under the protection of the law in Spain. You’ll learn more about the possible modification of this amendment , which may be passed within December of 2022. You can also sign a pre-written letter addressed to the Spanish Ambassador and send it via email.  One can do so even after the amendment has passed. By clicking on the Facebook link below, you will be routed to my video explaining how you can simply copy, paste, sign and send the letter to emb.washington@maec.es .
Please join the thousands of people around the world to help increase international pressure on the Spanish government to include hunting dogs, therapy dogs and police dogs under animal protection laws as all working dogs currently do not qualify for this protection as pets do. People can cruelly mistreat these dogs, as the courtesy of animal protection is not extended to them.
Tune in to learn more about the plight of the Galgos and how, together, we can help to end their suffering once and for all.
