Episode 23: Origin Stories - Kate Flynn

In this episode, we talk to DEPT® Project Manager Kate Flynn about her origin story: She talks about how she went from Architect, to Construction Manager, to Software Project Manager. This leads to a great conversation about the parallels between architecture and software, and what software engineering can learn from architecture. Kate also shares her thoughts on striking a balance between planning too much, and planning just enough. Finally, what origin story would be complete without a tale about building a two story underground bunker and powerlifting? Enjoy!

The only technical podcast that keeps me interested

I’m not typically one for technical podcasts as they aren’t really what I want to listen to during my free time, since I spend so much time deep in code at work, but the ShipIt podcast has piqued my interest and has continued to keep me excited for upcoming episodes. I like how there are a variety of individuals, with different perspectives and thoughts on the various subjects, who are willing to discuss them and talk about what works well and what doesn’t. Everything from hiring processes to Android development to backend vs front end practices has been extremely interesting and helpful as it conveys knowledge that those individuals have gained from their experiences both with the technology and within the workforce. Keep up the great work! I’m looking forward to the next episode!

Pragmatic advice from people who know their stuff

Subject matter is very practical, and so are the opinions. Refreshing to hear developers talk about things that matter and not just what’s hot. I want more ship it!

Let's Shipit!

I've been looking for a great podcast to listen to regarding the tech industry and this one really hits home! While many podcasts often discuss in-depth code that only a select few will understand, this podcast does a great job of being personable and welcoming to all of its listeners. Shipit also provides great insight into the thoughts of those who are hiring and may even help job seekers in the pursuit of their next role. 5/5
