099 - What can we learn from the "Dementia Village"? with founder Janette Spiering

099 - What can we learn from the "Dementia Village"? with founder Janette Spiering

In this episode, I am delighted to welcome Janette Spiering, who is the founder of the Dementia Village in the Netherlands. Janette shares how she bought her vision to life, the challenges she had and the impact this revolutionary way of supporting people with dementia has had on individuals but also on the way people with dementia are supported worldwide. I ask her if this model be used for people with other support needs, listen to hear her thoughts.

Jannette Spiering is founder of the Hogewey vision on care for people living with dementia and founder of TheHogeweyk® , world’s first “dementia-village”. Jannette has been working in care since 1982 and has almost 40years of experience in operational, tactic and strategic management.

Jannette focusses particularly on the elderly care & dementia care sector and community-based aged care. Keywords she uses are: de-institutionalization, transformation and normalization of the current and established vision of elderly care. She is a strong advocate for humanizing care and calls for a radical change, a paradigm shift, from the prevailing medical model to a social approach to ageing and dementia.https://www.bethecareconcept.com/en/Contact info@bethecareconcept.com

097 - Providing Housing for Homeless People with Robert Mellors

097 - Providing Housing for Homeless People with Robert Mellors

In this episode Robert Mellors explains how his own experience of homelessness inspired him to set up a housing association. He shares the lessons he has learned in setting it up and running a service to provide housing for homeless people. Robert talks about good and bad experiences with landlords, the issues around rent to rent in supported living and shares some great advice for those looking to set up a service.

Robert Mellors has experienced several periods of homelessness himself, and has taken voluntary and paid roles within a range of homelessness services, he became a qualified debt counsellor and caseworker specializing in welfare benefits, employment law, homelessness law, and consumer law, which enabled him to represent clients in various courts and tribunals.. He then set up his own service obtaining a Supporting People contract.

It was during 2010 that Robert decided to start providing housing for the homeless in Sheffield, initially for families, but at the end of 2010 Robert started working as a Specialist Caseworker for Citizens Advice Bureau, within a project helping people with drug and/or alcohol dependency issues. He saw the need for a flexible and supportive housing service for this type of client. In 2011/12 Robert’s housing association, Choice Housing Trust, diversified into the provision of shared supported housing for single homeless people with additional support needs.

096 - How will the Renters Reform Bill affect Supported Living?

096 - How will the Renters Reform Bill affect Supported Living?

In this episode Suzanne Smith explains how the proposed changes within the Renters Reform Bill could affect Supported Living. It is important that both providers and property investors understand the changes to tenancies and grounds for possession. Proposed changes to the responsibilities for superior landlords could have big implications for investing in supported living property , but we discuss a clause property investors could add to leases to protect themselves.

Suzanne Smith is a lawyer turned self-managing landlord with a portfolio of houses in Maidstone, Kent. She came to property investing fairly late when she “retired” as a corporate lawyer at the age of 51, after working for 25 years in senior in-house legal roles for multinational biotech companies.

Suzanne started to share what she was learning as a landlord on her Instagram account, @indie_landlord, with practical reels that also drew on her experience and training as a lawyer. This led to her setting up her blog, The Independent Landlord, in August 2022, which provides reliable, free content on all aspects of being a landlord. It’s grown to be one of the biggest blogs for landlords, with almost 20,000 click throughs on Google each month, and thousands of subscribers to her weekly newsletter. She co-hosts a new weekly podcast called Good Landlording. Suzanne is also an independent member of Propertymark’s disciplinary tribunal. The Independent Landlord website, where you can subscribe to the newsletter: https://theindependentlandlord.comGood Landlording podcast website: https://goodlandlording.com
