Episode 11 :: In the Text: Yahweh created all cultures

Episode 11 :: In the Text: Yahweh created all cultures

The Tower of Babel has always felt like a distant story about a vengeful God. Jeremy and I dive into this story and reveal what knowledge we gained in translating it. The Tower of Babel is a story about empire and the quest for power, about poor theology and the dangerous cycle of confirmation bias.

But, most importantly, it’s about the absolute necessity for diversity. Diversity in representation, voice, relationships, and power. When Yahweh confuses the language, it was never a punishment, it was always a gift.

Today’s episode features a special reading form Timshel, so be sure to listen to the end!

Episode 10 :: Between the Lines: Timshel Team talks Narrative Psychology with Dr. Kyle Horst

Episode 10 :: Between the Lines: Timshel Team talks Narrative Psychology with Dr. Kyle Horst

After a little hiatus, we are baaaaack! On this Between the Lines episode, the whole Timshel team gets together. Kyle Horst, the resident Psychologist on the project, joins Jeremy and Bonnie to talk about Narrative Therapy and why our stories matter in finding our place in the Divine story. In an Evangelical culture where we were taught the “self” was to be diminished, bad, and untrustworthy, we push back on this notion and suggest that our own stories are necessary in order to understand God. Kyle is a Psychology professor who, in addition, has his own private practice. He also is a writer and actor. You can find out more about him at drkylehorst.com

Episode 9 :: In the Text: Ruth

Episode 9 :: In the Text: Ruth

Today’s In the Text Episode is all about Ruth. Jeremy and Bonnie sit down to discuss this 4 chaptered book and the approach they took in interpreting this text. The beginning of Ruth is one of the most dramatized passages in Timshel as it tells the story of being a refugee. Ruth is a complex narrative about the power of working together with God and joining in the work he is already doing.

Episode 8 :: Between the Lines: Midrash with Amy-Jill Levine and Sandy Sasso

Episode 8 :: Between the Lines: Midrash with Amy-Jill Levine and Sandy Sasso

On today’s episode Jeremy and Bonnie interview author and professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt University Dr. Amy-Jill Levine, and the first ordained Female Reconstructionist Rabbi Sandy Sasso.

Together we talk all about the ancient Jewish concept of Midrash! Since Timshel resembles modern midrash, this episode is near and dear to our hearts.

Dr. Levine and Rabbi Sasso have coauthored multiple children’s book in which they use midrash to help open up the text to young readers. This method of inquiry allows for the text to be opened up, to breathe air and for discovery.

Episode 7 :: In the Text: On Wisdom

And we’re back with a new In The Text Episode:: On Wisdom. Today we discuss the ever popular Proverbs 31 and it’s portrayal in Evangelical culture as being a guideline on how to be the perfect wife. Spoiler alert: it’s actually not about that at all!

We dive into the personification for wisdom, difference between wisdom and factual evidence, and more!

Episode 6 :: In the Text: The First Exile - Part 2

We dive into Part 2 of our discussion on Genesis 2-3 and hit a theme that is near and dear to us: Eve and the women.

So much of the narrative handed down to women in Evangelicalism is from this story of Eve. Let’s dive in and see if the text has something else to offer.

Fall in love again!!

I love this podcast, and I’ve loved reading along in timshel. For so long I feel like I have been frustrated and confused by scripture, feeling there must be more in between the lines but not knowing how to find it. Timshel illuminates this perfectly. Listening along, and reading these Bible stories with a new perspective, is so refreshing, and the craziest part is, it makes the most sense!!! Love this project, love Bonnies heart, and excited to continue to watch this journey unfold :)

Enjoyable and trust-invigorating

I love Bonnie so much, and I was sad to hear that she was leaving the Vox podcast. But now I get to listen to her more than ever. The insights into the Bible that I get from this podcast renew my trust in myself and the goodness of life.
Thanks!
