2022 Starts with Dare to Dream, Big Numbers for Prep Polo

2022 Starts with Dare to Dream, Big Numbers for Prep Polo

The kiddos of Texas descended on the Cy-Fair Natatorium last weekend where Joe and James faced off in an epic and shouty 12-and-under cage match. After some brilliant tactical moves, which included telling his team to "guard that guy!" it was James's squad who emerged triumphant.
[Joe would insist on saying here that it was a really fun match and everyone had a great experience... and he'd be right.]
The Sharks of CFWPC put on a great tournament where seven (!) 10u and 20-plus 12u teams competed in what is becoming one of the highlights of the season for the Southwest Zone's youngest athletes.
Meanwhile, news on the high school front where numbers are starting to leak that indicate far more teams than expected have already committed to playing UIL water polo this coming fall.
James and Joe cover all that plus ODP decision day and the Spin Lob tournament coming to Austin.

2021 Ends with a New Linehan, More Normalcy, TX Successes

2021 Ends with a New Linehan, More Normalcy, TX Successes

At least it wasn't as bad as 2020. The water polo world returned to some sense of normal in 2021 even though Covid was never too far removed. Nonetheless, Austin College had it's most successful calendar year so far, Texas showed it's capacity to host more national events, the high school season actually took place, and a new Linehan was brought in to the world.
We talk about all the things that made this year distinct in the history of Texas water polo, forecast what 2022 might look like, and dabble in some cultural markers for the year that is ending.
With gratitude to all our listeners and supporters,
    Happy New Year.

CFWPC's Chris Ellis, and JOs Session 3 Details

CFWPC's Chris Ellis, and JOs Session 3 Details

Dare to Dream is approaching quickly and will be hosted in January by the CFWPC, led by Head Coach Chris Ellis. Joe speaks to him about that event and much more going on with his club.
Plus, James puts Joe on the spot to answer a lot of questions about National Junior Olympics Session 3 in North Texas next summer. First of all, it IS going to happen. So then what? Who qualifies? How? What about sessions 1 and 2 in California? Joe straightens it all out... almost.
That and a brief recap of the Cowtown Stampede, 2021's final USA Water Polo Tournament, and a preview of next week's end-of-year podcast.

MIT's Austin Ringheim, and How to Field a UIL Team

MIT's Austin Ringheim, and How to Field a UIL Team

UIL water polo will be here before we know it and both Joe and James are getting questions from athletes and families who want to know the process behind getting their schools to field teams. Joe get in the weeds of it so that parents and athletes can get that process under way for 2022 or 2023.
Plus, Austin Ringheim is MIT's head coach, has strong connections with Texas, and has just completed the 2021 season with an appearance at USA Water Polo's Collegiate Division III Championship tournament in Southern California. We speak with him about a (kinda) return to normalcy this past fall and the hurdles he faces at a school with some of the most challenging academic requirements in the world.
And because someone asked, links below to the intro, outro, and interstitial music we tend to use. (Thanks for listening!)
    Happy Holidays everyone.

Mark Lawrence on MPSF Championships, Plus Game Days

Mark Lawrence on MPSF Championships, Plus Game Days

Mark Lawrence took his 'Roos men's team to Stanford and came home with two big wins over their rivals from Pennsylvania, and a respectable outcome versus powerhouse Stanford. Their (most successful?) season is over but the women's season quickly approaches and there's much to be done to maintain the standard that Lawrence has set with his program.
Meanwhile the year of 2021 ends with a bang with several youth events prior to the unofficial post-Christmas break. And just in case you didn't know it, Joe is a fan of game days.
Catch this weekend's men's NCAA Championships and USA Water Polo's Collegiate Division III Championships, both in Southern California

ODP Explained, 'Roos to Stanford, UT at CWPA Nats

We took a week off while Joe was partying with McCoy in Iowa so we take time to recap the recently-completed Texas Challenge Cup and Pegasus masters tournaments. Plus, a listener asks us to explain the ODP evaluation, training, and selection process (we try). We also talk about UT's ninth place finish at CWPA Collegiate Club Championships, Austin College's trip to beautiful and expensive Palo Alto to finish their season at MPSF Championships, which also marks an enormous weekend for men's varsity water polo with conference tournaments taking place throughout the US.
