Valuable resource, hope to hear more episodes

It is moving and inspiring to finally hear the personal stories of Singapore’s Old Left. History, like much else, is lived and experienced differently by different people in different positions. It is important, I feel, not to forget that for anyone who wants to have a deeper understanding of a topic. Even if the Singapore state and its current ruling party would like to provide a particular narrative about Singapore’s Old Left, such accounts will necessarily differ from the perspectives of the first persons involved. Whether people agree with them or not, the Old Left and their efforts contributed to Singapore’s independence. More than half a century after independence, it is important to hear their stories and understand why they did what they did. Acknowledging the roles played by the Old Left and their may be a first step to recovering a more comprehensive self-understanding for Singapore. This can lead to a recovery of that sense of community and a departure from the fear that continues to permeate society. We can also have a better grasp of the excesses that Singapore as a society may wish to avoid in future. Other societies have made efforts in this direction—South Korea, Taiwan, South Africa etc. Perhaps it is time for Singapore to do the same. There are a few things I would like to hear. Many of the interviewees spoke extensively about their sense of “Chinese-ness” this seems to stand in tension with their sense of being Singaporean or Malayan. I wonder how they resolve this tension in their minds. I also wonder what they think about China today, both as a superpower and as an entity that engages in human rights abuses and excesses itself, and where income disparity seems to be making a return. I wonder what the Old Left think about what is going on in Hong Kong, since many of the pro-Democracy movement there seems to be pushing for very similar things as they did in the past: Democracy, the right to organize, the right to free expression, better living and working condition. This time, it is China that is a root of the problems and pushing the crackdown, repression, and mass detentions. A another set of perspectives I would love to hear are the personal stories of the Special Branch, ISD, and prison officers from back in the day. What did they think? How did they see events? This would really help provide a fuller picture. Finally, I am glad both Ann Gee and Danny are becoming less apologetic and anxious when acknowledging that the podcast touches on political issues. Politics cannot be avoided so long as people live in society. Even choosing to be silent or denying that something is political are inherently political acts. It would be better if the presenter and producer are upfront about their choices. No judgement. Just that it would be better to be clear.
