142: How My Battle with Depression Helps Me Grow Closer to God with Amber Cullum

142: How My Battle with Depression Helps Me Grow Closer to God with Amber Cullum

Although it seems counterintuitive, a battle with depression can help us grow closer to God.  We know depression exists, and maybe we have struggled with depression ourselves, but we don’t really talk about depression enough in the Church. We might wonder, where is God when I’m battling depression? What does God say about overcoming depression? Is it OK to take medication during times of depression?
Today’s guest Amber Cullum shares about her lifelong battle with depression as a Christian woman.  We will discuss the stigma surrounding depression, what it is like to live with depression long-term, and how to keep ourselves mentally strong (including a conversation about antidepressants).
Today’s episode is especially raw and real (I even share about my struggle with depression too) yet it is filled with hope on overcoming depression and growing closer to God through mental health challenges.
P.S. If you’re struggling with depression and need prayer, please direct message me on Instagram (@vibrantchristianliving) so I can pray for you.

    141: How to Cultivate Self-Compassion When You're a Perfectionist

    141: How to Cultivate Self-Compassion When You're a Perfectionist

Self compassion is a big part of having a healthy identity as a Christian woman, or just as a woman in general.  If we struggle with perfectionism, however, at times it can feel downright impossible to have compassion for ourselves.  All we can see are the things that are wrong, or the things that need to change.
How can we cultivate self compassion when we struggle with perfectionism? As a recovering perfectionist myself, the info I’m sharing in today’s episode blew my mind!
I cannot wait to share how to welcome more self compassion, how to use compassion to manage shame triggers (often the root of perfectionism) and how godly compassion is a powerful way that God brings healing in us so that we can heal others.
    WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:
[2:01] What the perfectionist mind is like[3:38] Perfectionism is a response to shame[7:30] The opposite of shame is self compassion and forgiveness[8:31] How to describe perfectionism[11:39] Compassion for others starts with self compassion[14:28] A definition of self compassion[18:25] Bible verses related to self compassion[26:23] Why it is so difficult for us to have self compassion[29:30] Having enough self compassion to cope with shame triggers[33:59] Self compassion as a mental clearing[35:25] Loving our neighbors as we love ourselves[37:22] Believing in the compassion God has for usNEXT STEP RESOURCES:

How to Mentally Prepare for the Holiday Season Without a Loved One with Nancy Hicks

How can we mentally prepare for the holiday season without a loved one and manage grief at the holidays? Managing loss at Christmas and Thanksgiving can be extremely difficult since these seasons are traditionally a time of family celebration and fun.
In today’s podcast episode we will be speaking about grief as related to the loss of a loved one, but grief can show up in many ways such as grieving marriage problems or a divorce; being without a loved one due to military deployment; or moving to a new town away from family and friends.
Our guest today is Nancy Hicks, and Nancy lost her 28-year-old son to colon cancer a few months ago. This honest conversation about managing grief at the holidays is a powerful one and includes how we can manage our thoughts through grief, when to pause celebrating in order to honor the grief we’re experiencing, and how to honor the memory of the person we’ve lost.
P.S. If you are grieving, I would be honored to pray for you. Please reach out to me and send me a direct message on Instagram: @vibrantchristianliving

139: How to Break Free From Hopelessness and Find Hope in Times of Despair with Julie Sanford

How can we find hope when times are difficult?  We may have hope when times are easy, but what happens when that hope turns to despair and we’re plagued with negative thoughts of hopelessness? Even if we have faith in God, when there is something so terrible, so difficult, so unimaginable happening in front of us, hope can feel really far away.

Today’s podcast guest is my friend Julie Sanford, and Julie is sharing her story about a period when her family was walking through addiction.  A deep sense of hopelessness began to invade her heart, and she will share what she learned from that experience as well as how she helps other women walking through a season of addiction with a loved one.

@kimstewinspired ,

Goodbye negative thoughts

I love how Alicia and her guests help us get rid of all those negative thoughts that keep us from doing what God is calling us to do as women of faith, wives, and moms. I loved her episode with Rachael on body image! ❤️

My mother in law passed away this past October after a brief battle with cancer. My faith was all over the place but now it is stronger than ever because I remember how strong her faith was and where she would want us to be with God while here on Earth. This podcast took me back to where I was but more importantly how far I have come
