After ending a 12 year relationship, Dave Kroupa decided to get back out there, and he signed up for online dating. After several months of dating a few different women, he met Cari Farver. She seemed perfect: incredibly smart, fun, and looking for a casual relationship, like him. But then, after dating for two weeks, Cari texted Dave asking if they should move in together. He was confused - he'd thought they were on the same page, so he told her no. And then he received a message back from Cari filled with vulgar, abusive insults and threats. And the messages didn't stop coming. He received hundreds a day for YEARS. Dave wanted the messages to stop, but Cari Farver could not be found.

In the middle of the night on March 22, 2015, a group of broke into the home of Aaron Quinn and kidnapped his girlfriend, Denise Huskins. Aaron's story involved kidnappers wearing wet suits who played pre-recorded messages and wanted very little ransom for Denise's return. His story seemed so unbelievable to police, who were convinced early on that Aaron had done something to Denise. When that seemed unlikely, they formed a new theory: that Denise had never been kidnapped, and she was actually the real life Gone Girl.''
