BONUS Kathryn Bigelow Marathon 06 - The Weight of Water (teaser)
In this episode of the 2024 Kathryn Bigelow Marathon we are joined by our good buddy Jak to talk about The Weight of Water. Over the course of our conversation, which is arguably more interesting than the movie itself, you will hear us talk about possible reasons why this film came to exist in the first place, what may have drawn Bigelow to the project and why it was initially shelved for a year, only to be dumped into cinemas with very little marketing behind it. We also talk about doing research on a boat, the many problems with how this movie weaves historical fiction with present-day pretentious romance, and how Liz Hurley's presence may be the only saving grace for this film.

Episode 182 - Shame
In this episode of the show we are continuing our July debate about Men in Crisis as we take on a real humdinger of a movie, Steve McQueen's Shame. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about how this movie is equally something everyone should see and something everyone will wish to never see again, how Steve McQueen's meticulous and relentless directorial choices influence the thematic sphere of the movie and how Michael Fassbender embodies his main character and plumbs the depths of his death spiral. We also talk about addiction, searching for connection and meaning and much, much more!

BONUS Tie-in 37 - Fight Club (teaser)
Here's a short teaser of our brand new Patreon-exclusive episode of Uncut Gems Tie-ins, a monthly series where we take a classic movie and connect it to a film discussed on our main show.
In this podcast we are tying into our month-long conversation about male mental health and men in crisis and we are talking about David Fincher's Fight Club. Over the course of our sprawling and amazingly varied conversation you will hear us talk about the magic of Chuck Palahniuk's writing, the anatomy of this movie's central twist and the slick allure of a late-90s cult classic. We also talk about how its alleged toxicity can be easily dismantled, how the movie smuggles a difficult conversation about Gen-X and elder Millennial men, how it speaks to fundamental concepts of stoic masculinity and how it shows them warped into a cult and more, all in addition to unpacking this movie's cultural legacy, correcting its scientific errors and trying to make sense of its ending.

Episode 181 - The Art of Self-Defense
In this episode of the show we are beginning our July conversations on Men in Crisis, jumping directly off a month on Distressed Dads, and we commence with a great chat about The Art of Self-Defense. Over the course of our debate you will hear us talk about this movie fitting in the legacy of David Fincher's Fight Club, Jesse Eisenberg's awkward presence and the story's potentially divisive take on depicting toxic influences. We also talk about how much this movie owes to Wes Anderson, the kinds of metal Jesse Eisenberg listens to and whether it is appropriate to charge fifteen dollars for a lost belt.

BONUS Spike Lee's Major Joint 06 - Summer of Sam (teaser)
In this episode of our ongoing 2024 Spike Lee project, we are diving deep into the 1999 Summer of Sam. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us speculate as to why Spike Lee chose to make this movie in particular, how it relates to his ongoing interests and whether it pauses the filmmaker's streak of activist black cinema, or maybe if it continues it by assuming a different perspective. We also talk about Adrien Brody's accent, Son of Sam as a societal lightning rod, talking dogs and the whether the movie itself is a tacit acknowledgment that America as Lee saw it was going through an identity crisis.

Episode 180 - Get on the Bus
In this episode of the show we are adding a notch to our Spike Lee belt by talking about his mostly forgotten 90s piece, Get on the Bus. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about Spike Lee playing with form, advancing his concepts of cinematic activism and whether a single-location movie like this could ever be conceived as a commercial endeavor. We also talk about Lee's ongoing theme of absentee fatherhood, using slick conceptual metaphors to encapsulate archetypal storytelling, that Randy Quaid cameo and more. And naturally, Randy finds an opportunity to talk about Homicide: Life on the Street.
