This is the Unlock Your Child’s Full Potential podcast and I am your host Billy. I am a mom of 3 lovely girls and I’m looking for answers. I am looking for ways to fill the gaps left by the school system and teach my kids the lessons that are going to prepare them for real life. I want to learn practical tips that I can put to practice so that I can raise capable and confident young people who are kind, caring and authentic and who bring value to the world. I know it’s a lot. But I think as parents we have the unique role of nurturing the potential of the special human beings entrusted to our care. We can’t expect school and the teachers to do everything and we don’t want to let the environment decide who our kids become. It's up to us to coach our children on how to be successful and fulfilled. That’s why I practice what I call intentional parenting. It all starts with creating a clear, compelling vision of what you and your family are all about and asking yourself questions like “what kind of strengths and abilities will our children need to have in order to be successful when they grow up?”. Every one of us will have a different vision, what’s important here is to have some kind of a plan. Because the window of opportunity to influence our kids' development is small and we better lay a good foundation early on.
That’s my goal here. To talk to as many parents, educators, experts, you name it, and ask the questions, look for the universal principles, find as many tools as possible to be a better parent and give my kids a head start in life. If that resonates with you, join me every Wednesday and let’s inspire each other to create an environment where our children can blossom into the best versions of themselves.

39: Unlocking Resilience: Discovering 3 Keys to Trauma-Sensitive Parenting with Kathy Magnusson
We're delving into the world of resilience and uncovering the keys to trauma-informed parenting. I'm joined by Kathy Magnusson, an incredible speaker, educator, and trauma-informed expert and an adoptive mom of four. She's been helping students and teachers worldwide navigate the impact of trauma.
Trauma, as we learn, isn't just about the event itself but how our bodies and nervous systems interpret it. It's a fascinating discussion that brings us to the importance of awareness, not just for our kids but also for us as parents. Sometimes, recognizing trauma can be challenging, as it's intertwined with intergenerational and historical factors.
The journey to healing starts with awareness, a principle Kathy emphasizes. From personal experiences, we explore practices for both parents and children. Building routines, self-care, and mindfulness become key elements, creating a stable foundation for resilience.
Adopting a strength-based parenting approach, as highlighted by Kathy, involves recognizing and emphasizing children's strengths. It shifts focus from negativity bias to actively acknowledging positive aspects, fostering resilience and a positive mindset. By reframing behaviors labeled negatively, parents can nurture their children's strengths, fostering growth and family harmony. Kathy recommends the book "Strength-based Parenting" for those seeking guidance on this approach.
Stick around until the end because, in the chaos of parenting, we're here to unearth the tools and principles that help us coach our children toward success and fulfillment.

38: Emotional Self-Regulation: Turning Your Child's Stormy Behavior into Their Best Behavior with Laura Reardon
Ever wondered why your little one has meltdowns or acts defiant? In this eye-opening episode, I'm joined by Laura Reardon, a certified Child Behavior Specialist with two decades of parenting expertise. As a home daycare owner and nanny, Laura uncovered a crucial truth—traditional parenting tools prioritize short-term control over long-term learning. Delving into the latest neuroscience research, she explores how children interpret sensations, influencing their behavior.
Laura breaks it down: when sensations trigger the fight or flight response, kids act out. The good news? Laura provides practical tips on coregulation—responding to stormy behavior with calm and curiosity. But it's not just about staying calm; Laura emphasizes the other 50%—becoming curious about what propels your child's behavior. Recognize they're not "bad kids," but kids grappling with overwhelming sensations.
Stay tuned to the second part, where Laura delivers an abundance of actionable advice on how to teach the skills of emotional self-regulation with a real-life example featuring my own preteen. Trust me, you don't want to miss this interview. Let's turn our children's stormy behavior into their best behavior! Let's help them develop their capacity to regulate their emotional state.
