Often Nome, Alaska is claimed to be settled by gold miners, but Alaska Natives have been in the sub-arctic area for thousands of years. It is also unfortunately the site of a disproportionately high number of missing Indigenous and Native Alaskan women. When Up and Vanished host, Payne Lindsey, receives a tip from one of his producers about Florence Okpealuk, an Alaskan native who went missing in 2020, he is drawn to the mystery of her disappearance. As Payne begins his research, he finds an email from Okpeluk's family asking him to cover her case, and is compelled to continue. He will soon learn the difficulty of covering a case in the Land of the Midnight Sun as he begins his journey northward to Nome.

The crime has forever left a mark on the relationship between the community and the local police department. Payne arrives in Nome and learns that not much has changed since Ivanoff's tragic end. He connects with journalist and Alaska Native, Alice Qannik Glenn, who shares how the story inspired her journalism and changed the way she viewed the world.

I’m hoping that S4 has more coming. I truly enjoy the detailed storytelling

Overall great show, although one would like longer episodes and less advertising. I do subscribe. Most interesting is location, geography, details of the lives of the missing persons and how the families are coping and still fighting to find out what happened. It paints a better picture of what the local culture might be and why this case is unsolved.

Simply not good

There is just too much non sequiturs. I loose interest because the content rarely has any true implications for the rest of the material.

This review pains me.

Season 1 was the best true crime podcast ever. Downhill since. I’m 4 episodes into season 4, and I’m bailing. Very little happens to advance the story. Payne used to be forgiving of police saying they often in small towns don’t have resources. This season devolves into , “The police are not only incompetent, but they’re racists.” (The evidence of that racism was a single bad actor several decades who was successfully apprehended and prosecuted by those “racist” peers.)
Early in episode 1, the facts of the mystery are introduced.through 4 episodes, zero progress, lots of repetition.
I’m out.
