Are the Vikings in the Midst of a Quarterback Shuffle?

Are the Vikings in the Midst of a Quarterback Shuffle?

NFL free agency continues apace, and the Vikings are still engaged. They continued to make moves this past week, and it doesn’t appear they are quite done yet. Head coach Kevin O’Connell tapped a couple of his former players from the Los Angeles Rams in wide receiver Brandon Powell and linebacker Tony Reeder, and both moves should help fill a couple roster holes before the draft and give GM Kwesi Adolfo-Mensah a little more flexibility to choose the best player available—when he finally makes his first pick.

Week 2 of Free Agency—Solving the Matrix

Week 2 of Free Agency—Solving the Matrix

The second week of free agency has begun and the Vikings have some work to do. They spent the first week moving and shaking up their roster in a frantic effort to get under the salary cap—actually succeeding in signing several new free agents despite their desperate cap number. (Once again, I will never understand the complex “Matrix” of the salary cap—thank goodness the Vikings have the One in executive VP of football operations Rob Brzezinsk.) There was significant bloodletting last week, but several tourniquets were applied.

Kendricks is Released; the Roster Purge Begins

Kendricks is Released; the Roster Purge Begins

The dominos are falling. Longtime middle linebacker Eric Kendricks was released by the Vikings on Monday in a salary cap savings of $9.5 million. It is a difficult pill to swallow for all Vikings fans, as Kendricks has been one of the most productive players on the field during his eight-year career and one of the finest off the field as a former NFL Man of the year nominee. Kendricks has been an excellent member of the Vikings organization, and it is a huge loss for the team.

    The Vikings Icy Offseason Begins

    The Vikings Icy Offseason Begins

On the docket this week we will talk about Kirk Cousins contract. There are reports that the Vikings aren’t going to extend him for another one-season contract, which leaves two choices: play out the existing one or extend him for a few more years while they try to find the QB of the future. We will postulate what to expect next. And we shudder in anticipation of the coming Kirkistan battle over the haters. We will even dive into Cousins on the Netflix NFL QB series. Not for the faint of heart.

Time to Plow the Salary Cap for the Vikings

Time to Plow the Salary Cap for the Vikings

The snow is piling up this week like salary cap dollars have for the Vikings the past few seasons,  and they need to plow some of that cash out of here. It remains to be seen whose cash is extended, whose gets dumped and whose goes dead. They have a lot of decisions to make as we head into the new NFL year.

Two Guys Who Ooze True Purple

I've been listening to Joe Johnson and Joe Oberle for several years--hence the name "Morning Joes--and they always have a unique and dare I say, oddly refreshing take on the machinations of the Minnesota Vikings. The two gents, a pair of unmatched socks, have a charming synergy, which is fueled by the neurosis of Joe Johnson, a younger man than the other. Joe the Younger articulates what many fans feel about the never-ending struggle of the Vikings to win a Super Bowl, a state-of-mind that no Vikings executive, coach, player or fan has ever experienced. We're talking nearly six decades of frustration, folks. The two men work together on a part-time basis--Joe the Younger has an indirect financial stake in the Vikings success as owner of a pair of Vikings websites while Joe the Older edits one of them. The latent panic of Joe the Younger when the Vikings lose or do something completely off the rails is amusing to hear. The soothing strokes of Joe the Older trying to bring some perspecitive to Joe the Younger gives the show a brotherly feel. Joe Johnson's written articles (and verbal opinions) are often train-of-thought screeds that are so creative and funny that one feels s/he is reading the reincarnation of Hunter Thompson, minus the drugs. Joe the Older often acts as the Crisis Cop with the blowhorn, talking Joe the Younger off the ledge. I highly recommend this podcast, and visits to Vikings Territory and PurplePTSD websites, for creative and often humorus analysis of all things Minnesota Vikings.

Mark Craig is wonderful

But heavens could he use a new cohost. I’m not sure if it’s age but he can’t remember anything and when he does speak he’s usually wrong. Mark deserves better.

Jhsherman ,

sorry, i wanted this to be good

didn’t seek out a podcast to knock it, but these guys think the NFL is stuck in 1980 and hasn’t been evolving at an increasingly fast pace over the last 30 years. very poor understanding of positional value or how to generate wins in the modern NFL. altogether, it’s just poor commentary deliver and poorer analysis from the host. just not good :(
