Chapter 26 Spike Lee, Malcolm X Racism In America, 2020
What up yo
So we, Oldboy and Myself, got back together in the middle of this year, the 3rd act of summer, to discuss what’s been on our minds.
Of course, there’s film, there’s television...
But there are also documentary’s and current events.
I’ll be straight up honest with you, we’re all...
Humans in this world,
in the grasp of a worldwide pandemic:
COVID-19.
This is the summer of 2020.
The lost year.
We’ve lost approximately 150,000 people across the planet to this virus i the past 4 to 8 months.
No one is sure.
Attention turns inward.
Then back out.
People are quarantined to prevent the spread of this virus.
Wearing masks and gloves.
New York City lost 32,000 people up the virus within two months.
more than most countries.
It’s a new reality for us all.
living on a FaceTime like app called Zoom.
In light of this, tensions are rising.
I assume this is a natural reaction to being locked down like this.
But this is different.
City’s are exploding with violence.
The president has sent the national guard into cities to maintain control.
Or is that not the true reason?
Is it because the 45th president of the United States , Donald Trump, sees the election coming for which he is running for a second term as King of the World in his mind, and he fears he may lose?
That’s one aspect of what’s happening, the other is the movement:
#BlackLivesMatter
A movement I stand behind with honor.
Pride.
Am unarmed black man, was brutally murdered by police officers in Minnesota 2 months ago...
His name was George Floyd
Four police officers held him down while one stood on his neck for eight minutes.
He died, and it was all recorded and broadcasted to the world.
Racial tension?
No.
Anger.
People are angry.
They’re tired of it . If you have to ask why, you’re not listening.
Others are fighting the movement:
“Why are you angry?””
“Why do Black Lives Matter?”
And my favorite one to argue:
“ALL LIVES MATTER”
Completely missing the point of the movement.
That racism has been a constant in our lives as long as any human being on this planet has been aliv and for hundreds of years before.
This is something Oldboy and I take very seriously.
We come from multi-racial families, have multi racial friends we love...
And we hate racism... with a passion.
We discuss Spike Lee,
Filmmaker, activist and one of the strongest voices in the film industry since he entered in 1986.
We discuss his most recent film, “Da Five Bloods” And his masterpiece, his passion project, 1992’s “Malcolm X”
So I’m laying it out for you now, if a racist has slipped in to the audience… Welcome.
Listen closely, we’re talking about you… F****r.
To everyone else, We send love and stay safe. -
The Podcast Chapter 27 A Conversation With Actor Michael Giese
What Up Yo.
This is a conversation with stage and film actor Michael Giese.
Michael and I met while I was a student at New York City’s The Barrow Group Theater Company And Acting School last year where I began taking acting lessons.
He was my first instructor...he’s my go-to instructor.
Knowledgeable, patient, and filled to the brim with a love of all things film/tv...visual storytelling, at the end of each class I couldn’t wait for the next.
As I continued taking acting classes we kept in touch and then earlier this year, right before the pandemic hit, I got my chance to see him act. I went to The Barrow Group Theater to watch a stage production of Playwright Scott Organ’s critically acclaimed “17 Minutes”.
A story about a teenager who brings an automatic weapon into his high school and kills his classmates, while one of the school's security guards hides, rather than intervening and stopping the carnage...
He hides for 17 minutes.
It's a devastating play to behold.
Executed brilliantly by director and The Barrow Group founder Seth Barrish, along with an extraordinary cast.
It does not leave your mind for days.
Michael Giese played the father of the shooter in one of the play's most memorable scenes.
So unforgettable that when Ira Glass, host of the esteemed radio show and podcast ”This American Life”, went to see the play two weeks later… it was Mike’s scene and dialogue he referenced in multiple tweets on Twitter while praising the play.
Recovering from its impact.
Sitting in the theater, I wasn’t looking at my teacher anymore, I was looking at the father of a boy who had just gone on a shooting rampage.
The transformation was incredible.
A New Yorker for the last 20 years, Michael moved here from Iowa in 2001. He’s a veteran actor in commercials, television, film, and stage.
Armed with a passion for visual storytelling that rivals mine, I knew we would have a blast doing a podcast together, just didn't know how well it would gel.
The two hours shot by like it was 30 minutes.
In summation, he's a great actor, grounded and accessible, he's the kind of teacher that makes you feel comfortable when standing in front of a room of strangers acting for the first time.
You can't get better.
That's not lip service...ask his other students.
If you, like I, wake up one day decide you’d rather finally try acting...instead of dying wishing you had…
Sign up for acting classes at The Barrow Group. They’re offering classes online now. They're virtual, so it doesn’t matter where you live. (Links to The Barrow Group class schedule are below.)
Then hunt down Michael Giese as your instructor. Allow him to lead you into the world of acting and The Borrow Group community.
I knew after two classes, I was home.
I hope you enjoy the pod. We did.
Stay safe.
Stay strong.

Chapter 25: Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Review & Game Of Thrones Discussion
What up yo.
New year, new podcast.
Oldboy and I sat down in front of the microphones and hit record on my overpriced MacBook Pro to discuss Tarantino’s new film, Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood, and to celebrate the cinematic achievement it is.
We then dive into Martin Scorsese’s new teaser trailer for The Irishman which dropped the previous day and teams Marty back up with Robert De Niro in a film that will be released in theaters and on Netflix come fall.
And finally to wrap it all up, I ask the question I probably should have been more careful to ask, “What did you think of the final season of Game Of Thrones”?
A great battle ensues.
I say the last season was rushed, with flashes of brilliance and laziness. I didn’t realize we were at war until I saw the look on Oldboy’s face change.
He didn’t agree with my assessment, he instead fought on behalf of D&D, hailing the series as a masterpiece…final season included.
This is a raw, uncut 120 minute podcast people…chapter 25 of The Chronicles Of Wes And Oldboy.
Enjoy!

Chapter 24: "And The Winner Is...Gary Oldman", With Brother Sean
What Up Yo.
Recorded on the night of the 2018 Academy Awards, my good friend, brother Sean :
https://voicesfilm.com/the-podcast-%e2%80%a2-chapter-24-and-the-winner-is-gary-oldman/
To celebrate his winning of the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance playing Sir Winston Churchill in "Darkest Hour (2017)"...
One of the finest actors to ever grace the silver screen, Gary Oldman.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Oldman
We go through the career of Gary Oldman as we know it first hand through growing up with his films throughout our youth in some of our favorite films
We leave off 80% Of his body of work, not because we want to, but rather because the films of Gary’s we love we have emotional life long attachments to.
As I edited this podcast, I realized how focused we were on his early to mid 90’s work in the films:
Sid and Nancy
State Of Grace
JFK
Bram Stoker’s Dracula
True Romance
Basquiat
Immortal Beloved
Leon / The Professional
The Dark Knight Trilogy:Batman Begins
The Dark Knight
The Dark Knight Rises
Darkest Hour
There are so many more we didn’t mention, but this was done off the cuff straight from our hearts.
We celebrate Gary Oldman and congratulate him on his first Oscar win
Sorry, but one other nomination?
He is of Marlon Brando caliber, justify one other nomination to me.
Doesn’t makes sense, not to me.
To Gary...
There was justice this year.
Gary has the statue
Cheers!
