Women in Military Medicine: An interview with Erika Kappes, DO The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner

    • Arts

Many thanks to Erika Kappes, DO, also known as “Major Z,” for appearing on the show today. The daughter of a marine, Dr. Kappes enlisted in the Army right after college. She accepted the Health Professions Scholarship and did her medical school while in the Army. After her psychiatry residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, she was promoted to Captain and practiced psychiatry in the Army for four years at Fort Stewart, GA. After leaving the military just over a year ago, she practiced telemedicine and then transitioned to in-person private practice in Alexandria, VA.
During our 30- minute interview, Dr. Kappes shared many considerations that influenced her career choices. Her observations and insights are valuable, particularly for young women considering a career in military medicine.
