Backcountry nutrition, founding a business and hard lessons with Aaron founder of Backcountry Foodie
Aaron Owens Mayhew is a registered dietitian and ultralight long-distance backpacker with nearly 20 years of experience as a hiker and nutrition expert. In 2017, she quit her job and began preparing for her first thru-hike. During this process, Aaron realized how uniquely qualified she was to plan and prepare meals for outdoor athletes and decided to put her skills to the test.
She founded Backcountry Foodie, an online ultralight recipes and meal planning platform, that same year. Since then, Aaron has dedicated her career to helping thousands of hikers enjoy delicious food and improve their performance in the backcountry. She focuses on ultralight, low-volume recipes and meal plans specially formulated for endurance athletes. Aaron and her husband, Chis, now run Backcountry Foodie from their Sprinter van while living in the wilderness full-time. Aaron truly loves creating delicious, functional backpacking recipes and sharing her knowledge with like-minded hikers!
In this episode we dive into all of that plus section hiking the Condor Trail, how nutrition plays a role in her backcountry experience, how she runs her business and more.

Wonderful!
I stumbled onto this podcast through Renee Hahnel recently, and have been completely binging it ever since (to the point that I don’t know what I’m going to do with myself on my way to/from work when I run out of episodes 😂). Both hosts are so relatable, and the guests have all been so genuine.
I was born and raised in Colorado and live here now, and although I’ve always loved the outdoors, this podcast has gotten me so excited and inspired to explore more 😊
Inspiring stories that draw you in
I love the storytelling and inspiration this podcast offers. I throw it on in the car/while I work, and it takes me away to the woods or mountains in new ways each week. Highly recommend!
Misleading name
This show isn’t about women and wilderness at all, it’s entirely about how to be an influencer. There were a few interesting guests in earlier episodes but now it seems to be entirely about how to monetize your social media. If that’s the hosts’ goal for the podcast they should at least change the name and description
