여기서 중요한 것은 sublime 이란 단어와 unquenchable competitive fire 입니다.

정말 농구 기술이 뛰어났는데 그걸 그냥 단순하게 좋은 훌륭한 이런 단어를 가지고 표현한 것이 아니라 sublime...
감탄을 할 정도로 절묘해서 숭고까지 한 기술이란 뜻입니다.

그는 지극히 평범한 소재를 절묘한 것으로 바꿔 놓는다.

단순한 단어를 쓰는 것이 아니라 멋진 단어를 적절하게 활용할 수 있는 것이 중요한거죠.

Unquenchable..quench 라는 말은 갈증을 풀다..불을 끄다..이런 말인데요..이전에 히딩크 감독님이 나는 아직도 배가 고프다라고 말했잖아요?

그거랑 같은 맥락의 말입니다..아무리 우승을 하고 점수를 넣어도 그 갈망이 없어지지가 않는..competitive fire 경쟁심이란 거죠..
굳이 여기서 왜 fire 라는 말을 썼을까요?

코비가 농구 코트에 있으면 그 이기려고 하는 마음이 활활 타고 있었기 때문이지 않을까 그런 생각을 하고..

또 그 fire 를 끌수 있는이란 뜻의 quench에서 나온 말 unquenchable 과 함께 쓴 것입니다.

He had an unquenchable thirst for life. 그는 삶에 대해 채울 수 없는 갈증을 지니고 있었다.

Four years into his retirement...은퇴에 들어간지 4년이 되지 않아…은퇴한지 4년 이 되지 않아..이렇게 표현을 하구요..

seizing new challenges ..여기서 중요한게 seize라는 동사를 어떻게 사용했는가를 봐야합니다.

원래 seize 가 무슨 뜻이죠? 꽉 붙잡다...장악하다..체포하다..기회를 붙잡다...

이렇게 사전에는 나오는데요..마음에 와 닿아야 쓸수 있습니다 이런 단어는..to seize means to take an opportunity eagerly and decisively.
즉 열정적으로 그리고 결단력있게 어떤 기회를 붙잡는다 이런 뜻이죠..

은퇴를 하고 난 뒤 그냥 빈둥빈둥 노는 것이 아니라 아주 열정적으로 새로운 도전을 하고 있었단 뜻입니다.

예를 한번 들어볼까요?

이건 무슨 소릴까용?

전혀 예상치 못하고 너무 깜짝 놀라서 이게 맞나? 이러면서 한번 더 보게되는 상황이 있죠?
예를 들면 고등학교때 좀 촌스럽던 남자사람친구가 대학에 가서 갑자기 만찢남이 된거죠..
그럼 쟤가 쟤가 맞나? 이러면서 눈을 비비고는 다시 한번 보죠?

바로 그때 do a double take 라고 씁니다.

이건 무슨 말일까요?
It means to do something without making much effort to do it well..
이건 일을 잘 하려고 노력을 하지 않고 그냥 하는 거죠..시늉만 한다 이런 말입니다.

Captain Slacker only has a week left at this job, so he’s not working very hard – he’s just going through the motions.

캡틴 슬랙커는 이제 1주일만 일하면 이 일을 그만둘거에요 그래서 일을 열심히 하지 않아요..그냥 하는 시늉만 하는 거죠…

남친이나 여친이랑 싸울때 듣는 시늉만 하고 그러면 ..you don’t really care, do you? You’re just going through the motions right now..

이젠 뭐 신경 한쓰지? 그냥 시늉만 하고 있는거야..이렇게 말할수도 있겠죠..

자 bombast 라는 말 자체가 겉만 번드르르한 말을 말합니다.
그럼 겉만 번드르르 하게 말하는 사람을 bombaster..bombaster 라고 합니다.

The second type of person is a delusionist...delusionist..
Delusion 이 무슨 말이죠? 바로 망상..착각..오해...이런 말이죠?

사실이 아닌데 그걸 사실이라고 착각을 하거나 망상을 하는 사람..있지 않나요?
식샤를 합시다 season 1에 나오는 오도연 변호사라고 생각이 나시나요?
왜 항상 김변호사가 자기를 챙겨주고 윤두준 씨가 자기를 좋아한다고 착각을 혼자서 하고 있잖아요?

바로 그런 사람을 delusionist...라고 합니다.

이건 어떤 사람을 말할까요?
논의, 추론, 깨우침 을 싫어하는 사람을 misologist 라고 합니다.
그냥 아 몰라 몰라~됐어~ 복잡해서 알고 싶지 않아..
머릿속에서 떠오르는 사람 있엇죠?
바로 그 사람이 misologist 입니다.

The 4th type of person is kinda funny..buttinsky...buttinsky.
ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ 이 말 가끔가다 저도 하는데
사실 참견하다 끼어들다라는 뜻의 butt in 이라는 단어와 슬라빅 언어에서 사람이라는 뜻을 가진 sky 를 합쳐서 만든 일종의 말장난입니다.

참견쟁이..이런 사람을 buttinsky 라고 합니다.

즉 누가 시키는 대로 하다 이런 말입니다.

네가 부탁할 때마다 내가 네 말을 들어줘야 돼?

때때로 돈을 허투루 쓰고 다닐때도 이 말을 씁니다.

쉘던이 학교에서 하는 과학경진대회 science fair 에서 1등을 받지 못해서 화를 내면서 이렇게 말을 한겁니다.

자 여기서 중요한 말은 mediocrity...이게 무슨 말인지 잘 모르시는 분들도 많으실것 같은데요..mediocre 보통밖에 되지 않는 이란
형용사 mediocre 의 명사형 mediocrity..평범함 이란 뜻입니다.

쉘던은 천재라서 평균의 high school의 아이들이 하는 모든것이 전부 다 자신의 excellence 와는 비교가 되겠죠..그래서 이렇게 소리칩니다.
평범함을 찬양하고 있어요 여러분들은!
