Celebrating Educators at the STLHEs with the D2L Innovation Award Co-Chairs

It's nearly time to roll out the red carpet!

The STLHE Awards are fast approaching, and the D2L Innovation Award in Teaching and Learning Co-Chairs couldn't be more excited.  Dr. Aleksandra Zecevic and Dr. Jovan Groen sat down with Dr. Cristi Ford to discuss the highly anticipated annual event and of course, the awards!

As our Canadian listeners know, the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) is a community of professionals looking to enhance college and university-level teaching and learning from coast to coast. Operating in both English and French, not only do they support resource sharing and collaboration between students and educators, but they also reward and recognize innovation and excellence in the field of HE.

One of the most coveted awards among educators is the D2L Innovation Award. Established in 2012, this award celebrates and recognizes up to five post-secondary collaborative teams each year for their innovative methods that undeniably change the face of student-centered teaching and learning. The winning team will be recognized at the Conference Awards Ceremony.

Dr. Aleksandra Zecevic offers a unique perspective as she is also a past winner of the D2L Innovation Award. Both she and Dr. Jovan Groen share their thoughts on why it is so important to recognize and celebrate educators and their achievements in HE. They're also quick to remind everyone that the D2L Innovation Award is open for international submissions... and while it's too late to apply for the 2024 awards, there's always next year.

The 2024 STLHE Conference will be held from June 11 -14 in awe-inspiring Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada at the Niagara Falls Convention Centre. Hope to see you there!

How AI Can Support or Prevent True Learning With AI Strategist Justin Bruno

Welcome to another episode of Teach & Learn brought to you by D2L.

Our regular listeners will know that we have been diving into AI as of late. As this technology evolves so must the conversation. It’s our responsibility to continue to question, investigate, and examine as it becomes more and more ubiquitous—this isn’t the time to make assumptions about AI—especially when it comes to education.

In this episode, your host Dr. Cristi Ford invites Justin Bruno, an AI Strategist at Michigan Virtual to join the conversation.
Justin Bruno encourages the responsible integration of AI tools in education but warns that educators must be vigilant to ensure it supports learning, rather than circumvents it.  Together, Cristi and Justin explore the following topics:
Whether LLMs help or hinder learningAI in the classroom: practical benefits and strategies How to prevent the use of AI from setting students up for failureHow to ensure LLMs are used for enrichment and support, not as a crutchShow notes can be found here.
