Open:  Navigating Danger: Combatting the Rise of 'Blue-Light Gangs' on South Africa's Roads

Brigadier Brenda Muridili | SAPS Gauteng Provincial Head: Corporate Communication and Liaison

We address a growing concern on our roads – the emergence of 'blue-light gangs', impersonating police officers to prey on unsuspecting motorists.

Joining us now is Brigadier Brenda Muridili, SAPS Gauteng Provincial Head: Corporate Communication and Liaison. Last month's incident, where three alleged criminals were shot dead during a confrontation with police, underscores the severity of this issue.

Renowned criminologist Prof. Kholofelo Rakubu emphasizes the challenge faced by motorists in distinguishing between legitimate officers and impostors, fueling a sense of vulnerability among citizens.

Meanwhile, anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee sheds light on the involvement of rogue members within the police force in these criminal activities. Despite some progress in apprehending culprits, the threat persists, with concerns over the accessibility of police equipment to criminals.

As advice to motorists, Abramjee urges caution when approached by individuals purporting to be police officers, advocating for communication of intent to stop at the nearest police or filling station.

These incidents underscore the urgent need for collaborative efforts to combat the proliferation of 'blue-light gangs' and safeguard the well-being of all road users. Stay tuned as we delve deeper into this pressing issue.
