The Best Horror Podcast Out There
I must be honest, I get so mad at this podcast. Every time Andrea Subissati and Alex West cut to a trailer or a clip in an episode, I lose thirty or more seconds of their phenomenal insights every time. It gets quite taxing.
And that’s what I think makes this podcast so great: that I want it to go on for as long as it can; that it doesn’t seem like a single second is wasted; that I end up watching horror movies in order to hear this talented duo discuss them.
But I get ahead of myself. Andrea and Alex’s monthly podcasts carry a staggering amount of academic material, research and fun trivia about all sorts of horror movies and the production and pacing on each is excellent. Movies that you have previously watched only for their badassery, cult status, or to see how much blood the human body contains, you will suddenly find containing much more social commentary and impactful themes than you had ever thought possible. And never once does it feel condescending. We’re all fans here.
But most importantly, to me and I hope to many, are the keen gender insights they bring to each film. Horror films are rife with questions of gender and identity (good or bad, conscious or unconscious) and these are explored at length and add a sorely needed dimension to horror movie discussions, which are all too often filled with male-dominated discourse.
My only regret is that I can’t meet these two in person (being South African), and have long rambling discussions about horror movies over a drink or two.
But to sum it all up, listen to this podcast. Andrea and Alex recognise horror for what it is, what it can be, and what it should be.
