    Episode 58: Poly Styrene

    Episode 58: Poly Styrene

We're getting "PUNK"-y this week and talking about the front woman of the punk band X-ray Spex. She didn't fit in anywhere, and had thoughts, feelings, and ideas to share with the world... so she grabbed a microphone and sang about them.

Her life was short, and her career shorter, but the influence that she had on a genre and on girls everywhere lives on today.

    Episode 57: Janis Joplin

    Episode 57: Janis Joplin

This week is a special tribute to one of my favorite singers… the woman who teenaged me was sure was the ONLY SOUL ever to exist that knew my pain. Janis Joplin threw herself into every syllable she sang and
exploded with passion from the very core of her being. Her world-wise ways and flamboyant fashion shattered the traditional stereotypes that female artists faced.

    Episode 56: Miriam Makeba

    Episode 56: Miriam Makeba

Today's woman was known by many names: Mama Africa, the Empress of African Song, and Zenzi (her African name that was a gift from her mother). The world would come to know her as Miriam Makeba... and they would LOVE her talent and positive spirit. At least, until, she started using her voice to directly criticize the apartheid government of her home. Miriam was loud and proud and when people rejected her, she picked herself up and started again somewhere else.

    Episode 55: Hazel Scott

    Episode 55: Hazel Scott

Today’s episode was inspired by my son (and special guest!) who heard about Hazel Scott and made sure that she was on my list of women to research. She wasn’t just an incredibly talented musician, she was also a champion of civil rights. Hazel is the perfect woman to kick of our series this month celebrating Women in Music.

    Episode 54: Queen Lili’uokalani

    Episode 54: Queen Lili’uokalani

Join me to learn about the first (and last!) Queen Regent of the Hawaiian Islands. Queen Lili’uokalani took the throne during one of the most trying times in Hawaii history. She loved her kingdom and its people and led with peace and humanity. She is a shining example of staying true to your vision, sacrificing for those who trust you, and adapting to a world that doesn’t see your worth.

Episode 53: Queen Nanny of the Windward Maroons

Episode 53: Queen Nanny of the Windward Maroons

On today's episode we're going to be talking about a woman who was an outstanding military leader, a symbol of unity and strength, a freedom fighter... and a bit of an enigma. The history writers during her lifetime viewed her (and her people) as dangerous animals, and wrote of them as such; however, Jamaican Maroons speak of her reverently and still believe that she looks after them and protects them to this day.
